My takeaway from this thread is, some people have been everywhere, done everything and have formed their own views on what "risk" is and aren't interested in learning from other people's mistakes.

Some other people would call these people "pig-headed"

By the way, as a biker I don't really care one way or another if I'm told to get off my bike to fill it. I'll obey the instructions and get on with it with a smile, it's not worth caring about!

As a all year round biker, I used to get annoyed when I saw bikers sitting astride a bike when filling it. I could see no need for it until I got my present winter bike a Honda CBF500. By filling it with the bike upright which I can only do by sitting on it, I can get quite a lot more petrol in it than if it were on the side stand. (There is no centre stand) With my Triumph Daytona , it doesn't make a lot of difference. I don't like doing it, but I still do it anyway. I leave the side down though in case I have to suddenly leap off it! Almost everything we do is a risk, it's how we manage the risk. Although I'm a biker which is considered a dangerous pursuit, I consider myself risk averse.
A few months ago I was dragging a car trolley jack along by the handle and the trolley fell off the handle and fell on my right foot and broke my little toe. The irony was I was wearing steel cap trainers but my little toe was still exposed to injury.

Not at all.

I know one engineer who did not follow safety rules.
Stating he has done this years, knows what he is doing and this is dumb rules any way.

He now has 1.,5 arms, no job.

I would post the image of his arm but the mods will not allow it.

Going back to the OP post.

If he gets away with it, no harm done to him. But it will sow the seeds of back practise.

If he did have an accident. You can be sure their will be a witch hunt to find some one to blame.

I bet he would of had some safety training, if that was good enough or ignored we will never know.

If he does have an accident their will be new rules put in place.

May be they will be put in place by an experienced person who know the trade. Not some one who has learnt his skill from a book.

I think the moral of the story is: if you see someone doing something you consider dangerous, let them know.

Something I've always wanted to confirm - (and a bit of a thread change), but will petrol landing on a hot exhaust ignite, or just, (hopefully), instantaneously evaporate?

Its not something I purposely intend putting to the test - but would just like to know. (I ride a bike with the fuel tank located under the seat and periodically, regardless of taking extreme care, I have overfilled the tank causing fuel spillage onto the hot exhaust..... )

Petrol auto-ignition temperature 280 degrees. In practice, it's usually slightly higher, as material surface conditions play a part. Yes exhausts can be a hotter than that... but usually cool down fairly quickly too.
Bottom line - i wouldn't try it on purpose

Brake fluid however, in the same test, went up every time....

Petrol vapour and a spark - lethal. Hot petrol it seems isn't. Strange eh?

Now I have sat on a bike topping up brake fluid and testing the lever..... don't think the engine was running though

From experience of hedge cutters and tuning motorcycles it just evaporates

Unlikely (though Jos Verstsppen may disagree) but there is always the possibility with a fuel spill. Especially if there are the glowing embers of carbon deposits.

I’d be more worried about spilling petrol on myself. Not good for the skin, not a good place to find out.

Few years ago I investigated an accident where a man fell off a modified podium step and broke his back. I had to take a victim impact statement which was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. It’s all about how the accident has impacted on his life.
