Unless of course you're on a forecourt, surrounded by flammable liquids/gasses and other people. I can assure you that were I filling my van and someone started that nonsense at the pump they'd be running a far greater risk than they realised.

Yes because you can't run away with the bike between your legs and your weight on your feet.
Standing astride a motorbike is a very awkward position to move from. Your first movement is up, through the flames!
Filling up astride is for racers, and morons trying to look cool, IMO, or maybe they just haven't visualised 'what if...' and how their lives would be changed by a random bit of fag ash blowing on the wind.
Lots of bike panniers and boxes makes it worse.
And what about people with pillion passengers sitting on the bike being refuelled? Not cool or clever.

Which is perfectly fine when you are on your own, with your own bike, with your own can, on your land . . .

But on a petrol forecourt, where I have worked and had the misfortune to deal with thousands of member of the public, you are not. Surrounded by other customers, equipment that isn't yours, over tanks holding hundreds of thousands of litres of fuel, with staff having to follow the conditions of the license to dispense, their own company guidelines . . .

So for you, it might be a low risk of you going up - but multiple all the selfish yous for who the rules and regulations of petrol dispensing doesn't apply, by the number of similarly sillily behaving clowns who call into a petrol station every day, and the risk to the poor sod behind the counter over the year is rather a lot higher than it is for you individually.

They would have to watch you going up in the flames, shut the place down, grab the extinguisher and come out to put what is left of you out, ensure the rest of the staff, customers are safe, then spend hours with the emergency services, their managers, explaining, filling in forms, trying to not get too upset about having to deal with someone with serious burns, in pain, or worse, dead.

There are documented cases of bikes going up, cars going up, clowns with cigarettes dropping them on the floor to stub them out (guess where the fuel vapours are?), cases of mobile phones igniting fuel vapours (that might be less with modern phones admittedly), clowns with cars that are on-fire turning up etc etc.

It is not nice dealing with all that - but you carry on with your selfish filling up of another 10p of fuel as it won't happen . . . and when it does, you will off course be able to leap vertically up off the bike, release the pump handle so it shuts off, stick the cap back on the tank, and pop the stand down so it doesn't fall over and spill fuel across the whole area . . .

Where I was, Hartshead Moor Services, while I was there, we had pretty much all the above! It is horrible having to deal with the after effects of having to deal with people who have been hurt or died, especially kids.

And, un-related, but an indication of the idiots the public is made up of - some clown in an Irish registered car was spotted dropping heavy bin liners in most of the bins in the main car park and truck park . . . have a google for "Hartshead Moor coach" for why that particular clown was spoken to by Police when chased down for putting all our hearts in our mouths, caused us to have to ask everyone to evacuate, and close the place down, all the while wondering . . . I've got goose-bumps now thinking about that hour or two from 30 yrs ago!

What was in the bin liners? Horse manure! She had a car full of the stuff, which the tip wouldn't take, so she was dumping it in bins - a bit better than flytipping I guess, but as it was bio-degradeable until she wrapped it in bin liners, that would have been easier!

Take whatever risks you want, but you can't say you don't want others to make them for you then go straight into making them for other people.

Taking a risk which only affects you is entirely your choice. Taking a stupid and completely unnecessary risk which involves others without their consent is unacceptable by any right thinking logic.

Which is why I put the qualifier "unless you're on a forecourt". We all take risks in one form or another, sometimes to extremes, and I wouldn't criticise or interfere in any way. Unless it's a case (very often) where they haven't thought it through and it affects others.

I'm just glad I don't have to deal with the riders of donor-cycles any more - or indeed, drivers of any other vehicle, 'cos the number of them with special cases of engines needing to keep running, why it has to be filled this way round, or why they shouldn't have to actually pay for the fuel they have as they didn't intend getting so much, or how to get to Endinburgh/London (ie north/south on an east/west motorway . . ) etc etc . . .

Tell me, by what mechanism sitting on the bike makes it more likely to ignite over being stood to the side? On hartshead youre more likely to have a wagon coming in absolutely red hot having climbed the hill fully loaded setting alight than a bike, which as I’m learning today apparently have the will and ability to spontaneously combust, but only specifically when a rider is sat on it filling up.
I don’t really get the bit where you drifted into the story of the lady with the bags, I never really considered sitting on a bike an act of terrorism and it seems to make a bit of a mockery of those deaths in the coach to use it to try and make some abstract point.
