I think they actually use a garage type fuel gun. The exact opposite to a quick filler more a slow dribbler but as they are all the same it doesn't matter . It's just bloody frustrating sat there waiting for the tank to fill .

Do you think it will make the slighest shred of difference if you’re sat on it or stood 3” to the side if it went up? And precisely how many bikes do you hear about spontaneously combusting while refuelling? I’m sure if they can refuel a tt bike that’s just done a 132mph lap without it exploding, you’ll be fine

Like the chap sitting on the roof grinding next to the crown jewels, it's just something I see and think "hmm, what's the worst that could happen". Well, the worst case scenario is you overfill (which is more likely because that is the entire point of keeping the bike vertical) fuel spills all over the bike and all over your nuts. You then have highly flammable fuel spilling over a hot engine while sat astride and soaked in petrol. I appreciate it might not catch fire but I wouldn't want to test the theory.

...so I choose not to do it. Why are so many people angry about that??

The idea was never that you could see it as a cheap insurance.

Its there for emergencies, one would hope you would avoid / mitigate or have natural life preservation otherwise it would collapse from being over run

Last year it was reported that there was a "larger than expected" rise in injuries on camp sites.

It when on to report that it was from people refilling stoves, lights, cookers and much more when they were still a light or still hot.

Not in my years of tree bashing, just evaporates really fast.

I wouldn't want to be smoking at the time though, worst ive had was a petrol/chemical burn where the cap fell of ( you guessed it a stihl) and covered my chaninsaw trousers had a nasty red blister for a few weeks.

Smiles. My Chainsaw trousers were and are are jeans!! Lol. I used to smoke Embassy number1 or Friebourg and Treyer when fuelling up.

1978 when I first bought a saw following the severe gales and loads of trees down in Cornwall …. I was logging up a huge Macrocarpa bought down by the winds in the grounds at a school I used to attend. Was cutting up from underneath with the saw back across my shoulder, only way I could get at it to nick outa crease joint to prevent the saw getting trapped when I cut the through cut.
Saw kicked out, went through the sweat shirt I was wearing and the T-shirt underneath…. Left two little marks on my upper arm still there today.
Am I gunna wear stuff that I can’t move in, melt in etc…… no chance.

Taken me waaayyyy back.

My friend and I both had 125 Yamaha’s , saws carried across the back seats… at the time I had an 18” Danarm soon added to with a 36” Partner P100 I still have and use. . Tools, oil, fuel etc carried in the top box…. When needed, 25 ‘ double section ladder carried, one section each strapped to front and rear crash bars…….. fine as long as you didn’t brake too hard and dig the front of the ladder into the tarmac!!

Anything to do with chainsaws is dangerous. Same could be said for sitting on a roof or just riding a motorcycle. The key issue for me is why make it even more dangerous...

ive a scar from a drunken moment with a tin opener. I lost one of my fingers, have got seriously close with three or four others, have had numerous OMG that was close moments …… was once combining across a slope so steep the uphill main wheel was lifting, no probs until the downhill wheel dropped into a ploughing rut, the grain in the tank swept down hill, the whole lot was about to tip until I stamped on the steering brake of the one wheel doing anything, and pivoted it all facing down hill….. another one, carrying bales down and across a steep cereal field 20 on the front loader and 20 on the back buckrake. 22 mph flat out on a MF 565. Left side Front tyre blew out. Rim dug into the soft earth … everything stopped fairly fast, pivoted around the dug in wheel …. One of the closest times I have come to tipping a tractor over.
Or the time like was mentioned a thread here a couple of days ago….. driving the forager on our 2100 Leyland with trailer towed behind in this farmers Quarry field .. horrible little field. Pulling up the slope everything ground to a halt, Leyland spinning ( very rare ) stopped and started sliding backwards towards the quarry edge. There was a piece of barbed wire across the edge, but I rapidly decided that was unlikely to stop the somewhat uncontrolled descent.
im quite at ease rebersing two trailers one behind the other, do it all day long when foraging but not when sliding backwards with everything still trying to go forwards. Knocked the Leyland out of gear and in a mad headlong dash backwards managed to turn it all across the slope…. Yeah. Just live for those moments still!!!!!!!!

ps dropped off that half full trailer, picked up an empty and then made it!!!

Fuel tank is opposite end on all my saws, you'd have to be bl00dy clumsy to spill it onto the exhaust. They think of this stuff when they design them My filler also has an auto stop when the tank is full.

Not on most small top handles.

Ms200 the tank is opposite side to the exhaust so it naturally runs down hill

Yes because you can't run away with the bike between your legs and your weight on your feet.
Standing astride a motorbike is a very awkward position to move from. Your first movement is up, through the flames!
Filling up astride is for racers, and morons trying to look cool, IMO, or maybe they just haven't visualised 'what if...' and how their lives would be changed by a random bit of fag ash blowing on the wind.
Lots of bike panniers and boxes makes it worse.
And what about people with pillion passengers sitting on the bike being refuelled? Not cool or clever.
