Few years ago I investigated an accident where a man fell off a modified podium step and broke his back. I had to take a victim impact statement which was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. It’s all about how the accident has impacted on his life.

he told me that as a result of his injuries he’s no longer able to have ladies and gentleman with his wife. It’s one of the most distressing things I’ve had to do

Poor bloke. 'Having ladies and gentlemen' is a fantastic euphemism though!

Really??? and who gives the rightful power of advice over another Dont you think we all have become sick to the back teeth of being advised,watched,monitored and much much more that has eroded our right to just get on with our lives Some of the antics you have done in the past in the pursuit of making a living on this very forum comes into question and i found you to be very touchy over criticism and crazy as it may sound defended your right to "just get on with it". world has become full of part time police and general advice officers and people including myself are getting suffocated by it all.

Everybody has that power. If you see something you consider to be unsafe are you just going to tut tut, walk on by and moan about it on t'internet?

There are ways and means of course and humour I find is a great weapon in such circumstances. Take that chap up on the roof for example, there's no way a passerby could easily warn him and even a shouted warning (which seems excessive) might risk causing a distraction and become a self fulfilling prophesy.

I was quite recently involved with a situation where a chap was going 3-4m up to do a roof job, stood on a pallet, using a forklift. I made my concerns known, the owner (of the business!) chose to ignore the warning so I had to walk away. OTOH if I happen to see someone filling up their bike while sat astride, I **might** at least let them know that petrol can cause burns whether it catches fire or not. Most regular folk I imagine would not know that and be happy to believe it's just a fireball they are risking.

Once your potential victim knows the risks, the choice is theirs to make. Another good example is welding on substrates which have been wiped down with <insert chemical here>. I didn't know prior to being told (on here as it happens) that certain older types of brake cleaner could produce phosgene. I'm glad I know that! I also learned about zinc and welding.

More recently on the news is the "right to repair" and someone suggesting diy electrical repairs should not be frowned on and even encouraged. Now that, if you ask me, is a step too far...

As for being sensitive to criticism, who isn't? But simply berating someone for doing something they're "not qualified for" is not the same thing at all now is it?

I stand by my comment. If you see someone doing something you consider dangerous, you should let them know. This is especially true in the workplace where Health and Safety is a job for everyone.


** I might not if I risk distracting someone concentrating on getting the last drop of petrol in for example but I'd make some comment if we're in the same queue later. Same with the chap on the roof. If I happen to bump into them later I might ask if they have ever experienced a 9 inch angle grinder jamming in a cut.

i generally mind my own business . but now and then on jobs if i see something is going to happen i point it out .if they take it on board great if they dont its at there own peril and if it does happen i say told you so

The HASWA has no legal standing if you're not working, and the HASWA is the usual route to prosecution... Usually.

I once got a petrol burn on my inner thigh....after generously refilling my zippo lighter and stuffing it in my pocket. It was a few minutes before I noticed a sore sensation and scurried off to lower my trousers for a closer inspection - thankfully no lasting damage done!

Petrol auto-ignition temperature 280 degrees. In practice, it's usually slightly higher, as material surface conditions play a part. Yes exhausts can be a hotter than that... but usually cool down fairly quickly too.
Bottom line - i wouldn't try it on purpose

I've seen it done once, by a guy who was smoking at the time. I got out of the way just in case, but nothing happened that time. When petrol does go up the cloud of vapour has spread a lot wider than you would think

I did have a chopped lambretta that I welded an exhaust clamp to the bike tank so I could mount it on the scaffold tube welded from the steering stem to the frame.First time out the vibration was so much it cracked the weld dripping petrol all over the place as I drove home.My solution was to weld a 1/8 inch plate to the tank then weld the exhaust clamp back on.

I'm hardly a philanthropist but even I struggle to comprehend this "Nowt to do with me..." mentality that's prevalent in society these days. Are (some...) people so self-centered that they will carry on without helping another human???

Indeed, perhaps a badly worded question. Do you follow h&s rules whilst at home or do you weld without an air fed mask because they are expensive for example? The weld fumes are just as bad at home.....
