I know one engineer who did not follow safety rules.
Stating he has done this years, knows what he is doing and this is dumb rules any way.

He now has 1.,5 arms, no job.

I would post the image of his arm but the mods will not allow it.

i have . my bike didnt have a center stand so had to sit on it while the bird on the pump filled it up 5 gallons. a bloke in a jag pulled in and put a gallon in his 4ltr car i shouted over it may get you to the end of the high street mate

Every time I fill up,
My ZX12R rear tank would have problems filling up fully, if I filled it on its side stand
237 miles on one tank full

The fall out for everyone but him was massive. I think the changes made the BS, but I can not confirm that. I do know in the training the "Tag out" , for want of a better term is now hammered home.

Glad it's not just me that thinks like this.

I'm hardly a philanthropist but even I struggle to comprehend this "Nowt to do with me..." mentality that's prevalent in society these days. Are (some...) people so self-centered that they will carry on without helping another human???

It is a fine line of course. You don't want to be all "ooh you don't want to be doing that" which is why I recommend some element of (dry) humour. Ultimately it is just an information exchange and if they already know, no harm is done.

If otoh they didn't know the dangers beforehand, you might save someone from serious injury or at least make them more cautious.

The third option, do nothing, say nothing, might lead to the situation where you are a passive observer watching someone become seriously injured - or injuring someone else.

I've seen it done once, by a guy who was smoking at the time. I got out of the way just in case, but nothing happened that time. When petrol does go up the cloud of vapour has spread a lot wider than you would think

Reminds me of an example where forewarned is fore armed.

Throwing petrol on a bonfire. Come on, we've all done it. Got to get that pile of damp scrap started somehow. It's not "safe" to do but understanding the danger is paramount.

I like to take a small cup and throw it at the smouldering pile (see, I said it wasn't safe!) because I really want it to go up in flames immediately. I have seen situations where people pour excessive amounts of petrol onto an inert bonfire then faff about trying to find a light. Meanwhile petrol vapour has pooled around the base of the bonfire by some considerable distance. You literally can't stand far enough away from such a trap.

Much better imho to introduce multiple smaller amounts to a live fire. Don't give the vapours a chance to escape.

Even better is not to do it at all but where's the fun in that...

That's what I expected, just wondered how it applied in your example. We use coi's with multihasp locks and tags.

the only good thing is mind locking the power off does save lives . ive had people turn power back on while working on stuff in a big building before the padlocks came out . i used to tape the switch over on the off position and a sign saying do not turn on electrician working on the line

There are all sorts of devices that can be locked into, onto and over switches of many types

The guy I worked for wandered off & I carried on, all of a sudden BANG, bugger had switched the power back on. I got a nasty burn on my hand, all the boss said was I thought you would have finished by now! I should have walked, I didn’t, but he sacked me soon after, I had to walk about 6 miles home & he drove straight past me. Best thing he ever did, never known a person like it, his favourite saying was “if I told you how to do it, you’d be as wise as me”

Indeed, perhaps a badly worded question. Do you follow h&s rules whilst at home or do you weld without an air fed mask because they are expensive for example? The weld fumes are just as bad at home.....

A good question. A lot of what we do at work has followed me home. Safety glasses in the workshop for example. They feel like a seat belt to me, I'm uncomfortable working without them. I use an air fed welding hood whenever I'm doing more than tacking, but my hobby workshop is also a part time business, so it's proportionate to the risk
However the HSE guidance WL3 wants us to use general ventilation AND RPE for sporadic mig welding, so may reconsider my approach. I'd like to try out a gun mounted fume extraction system to see what they work like.
If I was still just doing the odd bit of mild steel mig here and there for myself, I wouldn't be bothered about any of this in the slightest.
