It’s cost so much to build so far I can’t afford to run it now.

Some guy is coming to look at the Bulldog tomorrow, so I may have some funds to invest soon.

Update. The Bulldog is now sold, I’ve ordered some parts from Car Builder, and I’ll order one of them Chinesium Dgas38s, so progress should be made soon.

I spent another couple of hours in the shed this afternoon. I made up the power leads, battery to shut off switch, then to starter. But I fear I ordered too small a size wire, this is 25 sq mm, which I thought was the largest one Car Builder does, but they do 50 sq mm too. There’s only 4’ of it so it should suffice. Ends are soldered in, then heat shrunk. My mini blow torch worked well for this.






Spent an hour or more pontificating where to mount the fuel pump and route the copper fuel pipe. Got it sorted eventually, tucked away under the electric box.

Correct. They should be off horizontal as otherwise they rattle like humping skeletons due to air not bleeding and also will not pump properly.

I’ve used a couple before and did find that bubbles would get trapped inside and not pump through if they were inclined the wrong way, but sat horizontally they seem to work okay. I can play with it if necessary, make another bracket on the tilt if necessary.
Rubber mounting is just to stop the vibration feeding through the vehicle. Again, I may do that when it’s closer to final assembly.
I will no doubt run into the usual problem of finding something else needs to live right where this pump is, and have to redesign it all, it happens far too often nowadays.

I mounted the same type pump like this on the Reliant trike I had with no problems, noise or clatter. I think/hope that having plenty of fuel head above it forces any bubbles through.

Carb arrived, looks as nice as it did in the pics, though I had assumed they were ‘enhanced’.





I now have to make an adaptor, There’s a piece of 1/2” ally in the shed…. but maybe someone already makes them.

Been using one on the trials car for the last 20yrs - mounted exactly the same as you, hanging upside down. Mounts are about the same level as the top of the tank, so when the tank is brim full it will have a submerged inlet, but most of the time not.

You can hear it running to prime before starting - fast and loud and hear it go a lot quieter and a bit slower when it’s actually pumping. I think it was mounted in a very similar manner under a Renault 5 for some years before that - they used to suffer from fuel vapourisaton - when stalled up a trials section, at a silly angle, it helped to shove fuel through to persuade it to restart.

I don’t recall seeing an instructions on mounting variations to avoid, or I would have done.

I started making an adaptor for the Weber carb yesterday, mainly to take my mind of that ‘other’ thing that’s going on. I dug into my spares box, found four suitable studs, that can be shortened. I cut and hole sawed and marked out a fair bit.

Today I went out in the shed, after a lunchtime ride up the bike cafe, and there’s only 3 studs. I know there were four yesterday, and I’ve looked high and low, checked pockets, drawers, checked around the house, and simply cannot find the fourth one.

So, into the parts boxes again, I find some even more suitable short studs…. except there’s only 3 of them too.

There’s an obvious answer, but it just grieves me how things can quite simply disappear.



Halfway through, doorbell goes, Amazon guy delivering a watch battery.

Why he couldn’t just pop it through the letter box is beyond me, he didn’t take a pic or anything.

I lost my pickup keys, I’d just locked it 30seconds previous. Checked all my pockets, not there. Got on my hands and knees to look under the pickup, not there either. Found them, I was holding them with my teeth! The long bolt will turn up in the most stupid of places - guaranteed

It’s a Chinese copy of a Weber. Too small for this motor really, but it’ll do the job to get things up and running.

Not wanting to break with the tradition of doing every job twice, due to silly mistakes, I spent a few hours working on the Weber adapter plate. It’s been chamfered on the underside, gas flowed even, studs inserted, gasket made, ready to drop onto the motor until test run day….



Except I never noticed this little problem. Part of the throttle mechanism pokes down 15mm or so below the carb flange when you open the throttle…..

Anynidy know what phenolic material is made from or can it be bought in small pieces? 6mm spacers are available but I’d need 3 and they’re £13 each or more.

I need 15mm but to buy it that thick in the right size is £25++ so I bought 2 of the above 8mm and I can glue them together and machine as one.

I assume superglue will do the trick.

Phenolic sheet arrived, suitable holes cut, 2 pieces bonded together with contact adhesive, then cut and shaped…. everything clears, just need to knock up a throttle cable holder bracket now. Not that I have a cable, or a throttle yet…
