True but don't forget climbing rope is dynamic and works best over a long distance so a 1m fall tied to a thick branch will be a pretty good test and probably just as sore as using a static rope, I'll prep some ice packs

More testing required but storm has delayed that, first couple body test were successful - did add the bungee system in to soften the fall as only a short length of rope so chickened out on the spine snapping

Plan to try body weight rock loads on a solid anchor next, won't be able to log the force as no load cells unfortunately but can probably guess if I set it up like official uiaa tests.

What!?! Ridiculous waste of money. If somone wants to jump a little bit higher fence wont deter them.

Trouble is stopping traffic , investigating the death /was it murder etc etc costs the country a heck of a lot of money not to mention the extra pollution from stopped or very slow crawling traffic .

A few years ago we had the M4 closed locally for over seven hours when a guy jumped of a bridge in front of a n HGV & also hitting passing cars . A few thousand pounds worth of black sticky oily gunge may have deterred the guy from topping himself .

Load test proving >>>>> drag an empty stoppered blue 200 litre barrel up the tree set it up with a harness , fill it with water from a hosepipe don't climb the tree incase some things drops or breaks suddenly , pull it out the tree on a long rope, lower to ground and drain when done. ??

That made me realise the need for some form of cure here .
Three deaths and four other major incidents involving vehicles & property within 200 yards of here this last four years

Alison read out to me a few hours ago that the A48 between Cross Hands roundabout & Pont Abraham start of the M4 round about ( 4 miles or so ) about 127 major road closing incident in two years .

There are a couple of major "jumping off points" around here and the second there is a radio announcement about a Police Incident in that area you know what happened. I would be the first to agree that spending millions on anti climb anti jump measures is a strain on the public purse I also think of those people who have run over the body of a jumper as they hit the road in front of them, or worse. What or how are they going to cope with this.
What about all of the people they leave behind because first hand experience tells me the utter carnage they cause to people's lives is incalculable. You are not going to stop the determined suicide and that is a fact but there are people out there, thousands of them, who could well be diverted from their course of action and with the right treatment and support could well be major contributors to society in the future.

Well I am not going to start a new thread for this:
Today I acquired a couple of photographs taken from Scammonden bridge over the M62, the first is the view towards Leeds so the traffic (Car Park) is in the Westbound lane:-



This is the view towards Manchester and the traffic is moving in the Eastbound lane:-



I parked up and got out to take the pics holding my camera phone between the bars of the new £1.2Million pound plus anti climb fence.
The Council were ordered to act by the coroner following the 32nd death from the bridge in 4 years. More here:

There is quite a famous video of Fred Dibnah crossing the bridge in his Steam Engine, by sheer chance I happened to be travelling up the M62 on the day at the time and had the opportunity to watch that, so there is another useless bit of trivia.

In the days of the old hand rail, I’ve driven over it . . . and that was bad enough . . . so the day I drove under it to see someone riding a horse over it ! The horse, never mind the rider, was braver than me!

I had a Topweld 140 for years. Eventually it got stolen from my shed and I had to buy an inverter welder.

I left my Topweld on the back seat of my car. I came back from shopping to find the rear passenger door glass smashed.
Sitting next to my Topweld was another Topweld 140.

I plan to test it to the en15151-1 tests which is 2kn and 8kn static loads (203/815kg) but I think I'll have to do the 8kn test at local uni with their test machines that can pull it to breaking if it hopefully survives above 8kn.

2kn I can do by weighting some rocks with bathroom scales and drilling a hole through them for a steel cable loop.

Poxy leylandii's , 8 yrs ago the next door neighbour eventually paid to have hers 21 cut down after I told her they were too near our bungalows and also liable to be way above the legal height as garden dividers . The branches from her side which was four feet below my boundary were encroaching over 14 feet into my garden & were topping 30 feet high in places ,some of the trunk were 17 inches or more in diameter .

Even now after 8 years of being cut none of the stumps have rotted away despite being heavily treated with a stump rotting agent when first felled and having Xs cut inthe top to hold the stump rot chemicals .

The fact they cut an x in the stump simply proves they didn't know what they were doing. Stump treatments only really work on the cambium layer, immediately under the bark.
