I remember watching an equipment demo by one of the rescue teams that get sent out to disaster areas around the world, and they were talking about thermal lances. They said that in extreme cases, they could be used for emergency amputations, the heat killing nerve cells instantly. No idea how true that is, and I certainly hope never to find out personally!

That's probably pretty accurate. Not sure you'd get the neatest cut!

Finally managed to get our RB-211 spinning up today. Lots of internal damage to repair, smashed Carbon Fibre bits and punctured metalwork. Starter was dead and Fuel Flow Transmitter were duff.

Not the usual thing to find in small workshop, what let go

The following was not done by me.

But it was my workshop. The 2 MIS Members have a few health issues and need to be "takn by the hand" at certain times.
They are also very new to tools, how to ue them and what we as MIS can do.

They used no power tools only stuff I had to hand, or could be brought for pennies in town.

The 3 items are mine, but the restorations was all their work.

A Old chain splitter, a clutch tool and a valve tool.

All rusty and in need of TLC.

About to be boiled in Lemon juice and a bit of water. To remove the hard to get to rust. The rest removed with a pan scrubber and elbow grease.
Not to self, don't joke about things like that. One member spent 30 minutes trying to find some. The store staff came to bail be out.
Ooops.

After boiling in the lemon juice for 3 coffies and 4 Hob Nobs. The steel comes out a matt grey finish. A good wash in warm fresh water and a dry with a paint stripper.

A coat of 4 of bee's wax was applied.

I spotted the issue before water and lemon juice was added.

This light in my blast cabinet probably broke 12 years ago, finally decided to fix it. I replaced the fluorescent and ballast with a 230V led, one of those R7S halogen replacements.

This wire tensioner was in a terrible state.

The only part to move, was the small length of cable.
Even through the nuts look good, they are all damaged. I think some one used a mole grip, pliers. Or one of those " one size firt all" spanners.

The cable end needed heat to free it up.

Stripped, cleaned and freed up. The only original fixings are the 3 screws for the brass guage and pointer.

About 8bar.......as much as my compressor can put out. Heat is less localised with plumbers blow lamp....bit more focused with oxy acetylene or propane, you can probably go lower...

I had a closer look at my immersion heater element today, it hasn't worked since we moved in here last year.

The cap looked like this.

Ahh, so there is a thermal cut out. So I had a closer look inside, and pushed in the tiny orange button.

Result, it's now working. An easy fix!

Check the cable terminations in the spur. They have a habit of working loose over time, and arcing out. Strangely enough, it's usually the neutral.

Haven't yet fixed it! But everything is cleaned more or less and starting to get ready for reassembly.

Muffler got a coat of heat resistant paint. I think I will do the same to the cylinder that I media blasted the outside of. Since black objects radiates heat more effectively (they also absorb heat more effectively), that would make the cylinder fins work more effectively.

does the cooling not depend on airflow? so the paint will act as an extra barrier/insulation between the find and the air?

Black paint is not gonna be much of an insulator, it'll absorb heat from the cylinder and re-radiate it as infrared radiation (heat), which can then be absorbed by the air and taken away.

It's all pretty marginal stuff honestly, don't expect it to make a lick of difference in practical use... Just look nicer. Still tests have shown it makes engines cooler and it's done in racing. Which is in line with the physics parts.
