Has the X Type got a decent length MOT ? If not, bearing in mind all the trouble just trying to get it running plus the rot, I'd serious consider buying another in GWO and breaking the one you have for parts

Pliers arrived and pipe off in a few minutes.

Can't get to the clamps for the fill and breather pipe under the car no matter what I try, so thought I would pull the sender from the top (the access hole needs enlarging with a suitable tool ), and see if I definitely need to get the tank out.



That will be a yes then.

Thinking a 50mm hole saw from inside the car and an ebay rubber grommet should fix the access problem

Stripped down a couple of injectors but flushing a pile of swarf out of them so spent £90 on 4 used injectors "working, tested and from a low mileage car" not sure if I believe a word of it but they look carefully removed, all the codes are readable and if they don't work I have some comeback!

£242 in parts inc pump, tank, pipes, injectors, rail, timing chain, and a filter.
£39 in dedicated tools (ie the timing/pump kit)
Time is difficult to say as I really only get to work on it in spare time and when it is daylight and not raining, probably only 3-4 full days - not counting research time as I am learning as I go and forum time to keep you lot entertained

But, just like the Sandrail build I have had great fun and learnt loads. Using the oscilloscope for diagnostics has been a real eye opener and something I want to do a lot more of.

So over all it's cheap entertainment, and as a bonus I get a £2,000 car for scrap value + time and parts (possibly!).

Not the most amount of fun I have had but the tank is finally out.

Weather and boat work have been holding up progress. I could not figure out how to get the Mondeo fill pipe hole to reliably mate up to the Jag pipe, and the fitting is plastic welded to the tank. Decided to re-use the Jag tank and just swap the sender over. Spent a few hours with the compressor and wash gun blasting it out with clean diesel, sucking it out and doing it again until it was glitter free.

Yep the injector hard pipes finally arrived today - ordered over a week ago.
The tank has been removed and rigorously cleaned out, new sender, tank pipes blasted out, new filter, new pipes to pump, new pump, new common rail, new pipes to injectors, new injectors. (Ok, by "new" I mean from a glitter free car!).
Put some fuel in it and used the bulb pump (also rigorously cleaned out as that was contaminated too!) to pump from tank through the filter, sample coming from filter was clean in black cup with bright light and also under the microscope.
Will crank it with the injector lines off for a final flush - then fingers crossed

Good news... I don't need to find a new puzzle... as this one is still not starting

Obviously the pump was the main problem, so with the injectors re-coded and everything primed we should be starting .
Nope.
No codes, so back out with the scope and my now favourite test as it tells you so much. Injector current (red) / Rail Fuel pressure (blue)

In one go this tells us
a) Fuel pump comes up to correct pressure for start (about 1.6v/350 bar) - so pump is working, no air in the system, fuel in the tank and filter not blocked.
b) Pump ramp time is 1 second
c) The ECU is getting Cam/Crank and Fuel pressure info - because...
d) The injectors are firing (this is one but I tested them all)
e) The injectors are flowing fuel - the dotted vertical lines between the green dots indicate when the other injectors would fire - you can see the ramp up then slight drop in fuel pressure at each firing
f) no big leak off's on the injectors as the pressure remains after stop
g) 4 injection firings took 2.7s which by my maths makes it 176rpm - which is a bit slow.

I did do a manual leak off test and all injectors were fine. Did a cam/crank correlation and that was the same as it was.

One odd occurrence/clue was that I did a relative compression test at the start of the day and all cylinders were equal. Later on just after it seemed to catch on a couple of cylinders it suddenly sounded like it had lost compression - another relative test confirmed that 1 cylinder was down.
I would imagine that an extended period of crank/no start is not doing the cylinder sealing (or the starter motor) any good or perhaps a valve is sticking

have you tried easy start now you have put it all back together cranking speed may be a bit low to fire it up now

Sorry forgot that nugget of information - does not want to start/fire on ES despite doing so previously. Going to check for errant paper towels, cats, mice, socks etc.. in the intake.

Pretty sure that pump was the problem !

Not something daft is it? I shoved a rag down the vertical end of my airfiler hose to the turbo to avoid dropping anything down it. Managed to forget to pull it out - it ran well enough to drive down to MOT man and pass, but funnily enough wouldn't boost very well back uphill.
