‘Fiddly Bits’ spray cans and Australian Export Grade brush on are two of the worst. I used the latter on the Fobco and there’s no adhesion. I’ll get round to repainting it one day...

More hard work on the cast aluminium belt guard. Looks like we have grey filler, yellow primer, original green and then another shade of green which to be fair was applied quite well. It rips off pretty well except for the centre which needs light chisel taps to break it. Exterior will be blue, interior will be red, and I think I’ll glue the imperial changewheel chart in there too.

Used the water blaster to see if I could clean the insides of the guard. It worked to a degree! I’ll have to do some sanding in here. Under the changewheel film showing how to convert imperial to metric, I found a nice square of original green paint.

That’s the travelling steady back in paint. These seem to be increasing in price despite them being common - one was supplied as standard equipment with every machine (mine was missing of course.
The fittings have a little rust however it will blow off with a wire brush. The tips have zero wear - barely used if at all. I’m looking forward to stripping and painting my three point steady when it arrives. The two can live in the drawer beneath the gearbox.

I painted the inside of my HLV cabinet white too. When I was dismantling it I couldn't see properly to work on the vari-speed mechanism even with a light in there so painting it white made it all the easier to re-build and for when I have to work on it again.

Much the same reason I left the inside of my lathe cabinet light grey.
Red made it too dark to see inside.

Finished the cabinet today. Some little things to do such as some paint on the bolts needs stripping and the handle for the drawer needs brushing properly.
Otherwise, all very nice! The drawer interior is stripped and in primer and carpeted with tiles. I scrounged a roll pin for the lever system at a garage today - every little helps!
Next up, paint the chip tray and get the bed screwed back on.

Chip tray done!
Lifted up the bed one last time to begin the mating of bed to base
I hate lifting the bed, it’s so heavy and swings easily. Got to raise it a little to get the cap screws in, then it’s finally one piece again.
It’s been a long road to get to this point!

It’s not possible for me to do things the easy way...
I found a stash of o-rings when I was walking around to tighten the bolts - the same ones which should have been underneath the chip tray
I didn’t want to remove the bed all over again so I levered each end up and carefully slid them in. I had to remove all the bolts, however. Aside from that though, this looks great.
Next job is to give the bed a coat of paint, replace the E clip I forgot to put in the gearbox, then I should be at a good point to tackle the carriage which needs some circlips and a bit of love too!

@Maker here you go, another plaque cleaned up! Overspray with black, then pick the detail off. A bit of autosol irons out the scratch marks.
This and the red B&H one will go on the belt guard. I feel this brass one has so much more visual impact and cohesiveness than the sheet metal one that came with it. It came off a scrapped Roundhead Student I believe.

a) yes, it was sunny, but it’s still the middle of winter so the ground is still quite wet. Besides this, I have three pairs of shoes - gumboots, combat boots, and best dress shoes. The gumboots are low-cut redbands, ideal for slipping on, v comfortable to drive in!
b) the bedways are a complete pain to paint, its best to paint the stuff closest to the ways from underneath (through the hole) but you risk drips from the brush, not runs in the paint though. Thankfully that was the last coat
I bought a mixed set of circlips today so I can rebuild the apron. It was so filthy in there that the original one (can’t remember the size) actually disintegrated! Rusted right through
Interestingly circlips were only being sold in imperial sizes. Perfect for my mish-mash machine, a metric lathe with all-imperial fittings!
