What are you machining?

Dont want to waste my carbide endmills, but I do have an insert endmill. The inserts are no good, not sharp, so thought its worth a try with the cordless grinder.

Now it is sharp, though I think still too far off center to be any good, 12mm really needs smaller inserts!

Quick test cut on aluminium, quite happy, but for a single flute on alu it really needs much higher rpm.

The reground inserts and the holder are a good success, I had been intending to try this for ages! Its just the general purpose inserts are rubbish. I will order a pack of 1135 aluminium ones for it - they have plenty of meat for regrinding.

Tried the softer face of hard stuff with the face mill and normal inserts.

I suspect same thing with these inserts. So swap to mild steel to compare with h01's.

Mild steel front, hard stuff back. Finish on mild is poor, tooo blunt.

Swap H01's

Vibration and noise - gone. Cuts like its not even there. 0.8mm deep cut. Video 0 1mm cut

One H01 chipped while I was edge finding, so Ill try that single insert on the hard stuff.

Spent half of today lying under the Landy, starter solenoid not always working, so decided to spend the afternoon standing up by making a little breather cover for My BMW Bevel drive.

The old one's plating has gone , so I painted it and it is now a bit tatty:

So out with a piece of stainless bar for facing:

OD turned:

Drilled then used progressively larger milling cutters up to 3/4":

The part off:

Then a quick file then a polish:

Looks a bit better and will not rust:

And back on the bike:

Pity no test ride:

Reground the two chipped ones and a test cut on aluminium, finish as good as a new one, After cutting the hard stuff had bright orange sparks flying off, did not seem to wear the inserts at all.

As a hang-up from the olden days of religious zealotry, there was recently a 4-day weekend which I thought I'd occupy with a few odd jobs on the car and bike (that are probably not going to see much use this year ). Among them was a leaking thermostat housing on the Rover V8 in the TVR.

First attempt at brazing a trepanning tool on some tube. Insert moved while brazing, so may have a lot less external clearance than I wanted. May need to reheat and move it over.

Trepanning... isn't that the ancient art of boring a hole in the skull to relieve internal pressure?
As opposed to trephining, which I believe is the delicate art of sticking a red-hot needle through a black fingernail to learn new swear words

Indeed it is. He must have one helluva headache to consider resorting to that.

Almost done Im going to bolt it to the 35mm bar after turning it down to 16mm for a holder.
I did try reheating and pushing the insert over, no chance. Diamond wheel ground the insert down on inside.

5.3kg, ends are threaded M12 so can screw on extra weight if required.

That finish is straight from the tool.
