How repeatable is the chuck in itself? If there's any wear in the jaws, scroll or scroll to body, you might find you'd be as well using a 4 jaw chuck as you'll need to adjust it every time you open the jaws. Fingers crossed it's tight enough to be worthwhile for you though.Made a new back plate for my 6" 3 jaw chuck as its always been inaccurate enough to be annoying , looked at various ways to make it adjustable it but settled on one of my own design as I was very limited on space and only really need 0.5mm movement.
turning the backplate was fairly simple ive discused on here before

Cereal box calculations for pcd drilling on the mill there was only enough room to use M6 grub screws for adjustment

milled slots in the backplate to accept 16mm cubes bolted down and some had to be chamfered as so close to the scroll adjustment gears

could of ditched the cover plate but should stop some swarf clogging it up and was a challenge to machine

then had to drill 4 holes and tap to m6 in the chuck with no room for error as if anything not at the correct angle moving set screws will ramp the opposing set and be impossible to set

First test was worrying but but managed to get 0.01 runout without too much playing around so really pleased , its taken me about 2 years to get round to doing this but wanted to see if i could with limited skill

Never going to be able to afford a TRU SET chuck but for about £20 in materials ive got something close
Also remember to only use one of the pinions to tighten the jaws (and always use the same pinion)
