Thanks Pete, yes the attachments make the machine really. I haven’t even played with slotting head, diving head etc yet.

Going to have a go at 3D printing dividing plates and see how that goes as a temporary solution to then machine the steel ones. Great idea by Dave, the chap I bought it from

As today is Saturday again, the photos of todays achievements:
Measuring the excentricity of the screw bearing and the base:



This method would be the best, but i could not fit the rotating base tight enough, that the indicator would not drop significally. The measuring length is too much.
Plan B was to measure from the moving tables backface the necessary dimensions of the holes. Tricky, and i took every measurements 5 times to make sure.

The gluing of Turcite:

This glue what comed with the turcite itself, is really tricky to use. Extremely non-newtonian fluid, and its viscosity is thicker than honey. Not easy to apply on surfaces.




The oiler holes are blocked with a piece of tissue, that can be easily removed after, I hope.

The glue will cure during all week, hope for the best. Refer to my perfect (google) translation, complete curing at room temperature needs 24-36 hours.

The glue cured well, I was afraid of that I will not be able to separate the two pieces apart, but a little wood tapping was enough:


Then i managed to set up the lathe for the X-axis leadscrew: I had to remove the tailstock, and fix the end in the fix lunette.

Today I had less time for the milling machine project.
I made a hand schaper for the two tizit insert I have.


Then i disassembled the horizontal spindle, to get the grease out of it..
I have to replace the two bearing nuts with their safety washers, and one of the 51111 bearings. Interesting, that the manual says NN3009K bearing for the spindle, but mine had an NN3011K..

The roller bearing on the back I forgot, so I need to add it later.

Today i successfully disassembled the vertical spindle.
The bearings correlate with the manuals. In the front, there is an NN3009K bearing, for the radial forces, followed by two 51110 thrust bearings for the axial load. All of them needs to be replaced. I haven't disassembled the top part, the bearing under the bevel gear seems to be OK.
I will need to repair the quill's spring also.

How old is the machine? Maybe that was how they done it before double angular contact bearings came affordable?

The back side is sliding inside of the bevel gear. I would not say that its a rigid bearing there.. The machine is for light cuts, thats why..

By the way, my machine is made in 1960.

Turn the speed down on your Biax and reduce the stroke. Press down harder and keep the rear handle lower so that your scrapes are wider and shorter. Keep more gap between them.

Your blade looks like it could do with a sharper edge, test it on your thumbnail, if it slides it is blunt.

There probably isn’t room to do angular contact bearings which aren’t my favourite and tapers are big. The bearing arrangement in there is very good for accuracy and one has to remember the engineers that designed this are many leagues above us

Shortened the stroke to around 5mm, and im running it fron 24V (42V scraper).

Feels nice, I thought that for roughing a bigger stroke would be better.

Blade is definitely not sharp enough. It looks like it's skating across the face. The multi-line scratches are where the iron shavings are rolling under the edge of the blade.

How are you sharpening?

I have a bench grinder with a diamond wheel, p180 grit. I roll ir on the flat side. ma

Changed the sharpening technique, now the future-cutting edge is on the entrace side of the grind, not the exit side as previously, maybe that will help..
