Not sure of its proper name, but basically it’s a “key” made of spring steel, like so:

...that fits between the rail and the “chair”, as the baseplates are generically known, fairly old technology these days where rail is concerned. We move a lot of pre-assembled panels of line, anything up to 100’ long, (makes for an interesting journey considering that most rail access points are quite tight to say the least.... Always a joy to have 2 escort vans AND the Police in attendance ), and most of them use sprung wire “Pandrol” clips that hold the rail to the sleepers.

Well described, I remember seeing them laying around on dis used track bed after watching the local railway been dismantled in the Beaching cuts, I would have been five of six at the time.

I went to Tilery school as a kid. Stockton was great, used to go to the market with my Gran, usually on the 36a bus. Once in a while I would go to Leslie Browns toy store to buy chemicals for my various experiments (usually involving sulphur and saltpetre, I started early). Then we would go to the Farmers supplies stalls for brushes and the like, if it was getting dark nights the barrow boys would come around with all the Acetylene lamps arranged in rows on the barrows. It has the widest High Street in the UK.

Today, in the 21st Century, it is a sh*t hole. Some years back my late father prophesied that if they kept on (the Council) there would be nothing left of the high street other than Banks Building Societies, fast food restaurants and amusement arcades. He didn't factor in Pawn Brokers, there used to be one, now there are four or five. The recent (last couple of years) documentary about Tilery should have been shown against a backdrop of what the place used to be like. Hard, sure, violent once in a while but you could walk the streets as a kid and you were perfectly safe, nobody would harm you in any way.

It makes me want to weep the way it has become. A great town and community devastated. I know who is to blame and it is not "the Government" as people would like to believe. I will stop now before I get put on the naughty step.

stocton was killed off when they pedestrianised it. 3 times they have spent millions on it to regenerate then they stopped the market stalls that stretched one end to the other most of the shops are closing down . I had top go to the bank in a Thursday afternoon and roughly counted 120 people up top end of high street

Your right, they should have kept the old shops [like york has done] beautifull archirecture, instead they ripped them down in the mid 60s & replaced it with what we have now, an eyesore.

Saved from the metal bin at the tip this morning, Tweedle dumb and Tweedle dee in the hiviz vests didn't look too happy but they got a "don't bother me" look so they stayed put!
The large Record Stilsons are about 2' long the red ones made in France! I could hear them arguing on the way home...…

The 1024 boxes are quite good. if you take the screw cutting plate off the box you can see inside to adjust the parts and make it easier to graft onto another lathe. the centre selector does get tight and seize up and need to be adjusted.

Just a bit of a heads up really. These little ALDI tool chests are down to £29.99 at the till. Originally advertised £39.99 then reduced to £34.99. Got a further unexpected five pound reduction (Or "saving" as my wife would say) at the checkout. Took it home, liked it a lot for the money and went back to get another. Reasonable quality, rubber liners in bottom three drawers, ball bearing slides. Worth it for the convenience of buying locally compared to ordering on line. Plus I might be able to find some more stuff in the garage now.

Today I acquired a hydraulic bead breaker for the tractor/truck rims. Its a lump and a half, dont think my portapower pump is going to hold enough oil and the fitting is massive in comparison
