Tight ‘kin wheel bolts

I think a little copper grease on the threads, not the seating faces of the nuts or bolts, probably won't do much harm. I've been doing it for 30+ years without any issues.

Yawn. I'm guessing you're the guy who would always come up with 100 reasons why something was a bad idea and never offer any critical thinking or solutions.
Anyway don't worry, i barely touch even my own car with a spanner now

I do or at least did this for a living .
Normally undo the wheel fastenings with a battery impact gun (used to be a windy gun)
Replaced with the same gun set on low setting about 40 FT LB
If they were dry a thin smear of copper slip or something similar .
Then torqued to the manufacturers recommended setting .
This is always done no matter how much of a hurry the lads are in .
Every service bay has a torque wrench and a set of plastic coated wheel sockets hanging on one of the ramp posts .
The locking bolt / nut is just left at a run up state .
Using a impact gun all day every day you get a feel for things .
Alloy wheels that are hot after being ran on the road can have stupid tight bolts due to the expansion of the wheels .

Hand start the nut/bolt, wind in with gun just until contact, lower car so wheel is just touching ground then torque up.Don'yt put lower car to ground until wheel cap is on, don't put wheel cap on until wheels are torqued.
I use a smear of oil as I hate copper slip as the stuff always seems to get everywhere...........put a smear on the bolt and somehow its up your arm,in your ear, on the door handle of the car 30ft away.
To the person that has their wheels on and off several times a year, what is wrong with them that they need this so often?, mine are done once a year when its serviced.

Nothing wrong with them at all. Checking brakes, swapping wheels front to rear to even tyre wear cleaning inside of wheels, swapping to and from winter wheels. Just a general car nut tinkering. Had the wheels off my Mini today changing brake fluid and bleeding brakes.

thats a bad idea swapping wheels and tires over they get bedded in after a few hundred miles swapping them worn creates less grip only did it once on my stockcar and smashed it up on the 1st bend loosing grip and went strait on always replace tires in pairs as well

I looked at those sets, the one I use the most is the 33mm and it’s not in the set You would of thought the clowns that market these would of included that one.

Never had an issue at sane road speeds. Always keep them on the same side though. Can imagine a tyre going thousands of miles in one direction would benefit from having to go the other way.

I tried the copper slip,as an experiment,hasn’t solved it,so will degrease and fit dry,as there’s such mixed opinions,I wonder what the factories do on the assembly line,as that’s where the first liability starts?

I would imagine new bolts or nuts, likely with an oily residue from packing, going into newly machined hubs or onto studs would be fitted dry and torqued automatically by the multi bolt tightening machine [probably not the technical term ]

Actually I'm very much a safety first electro mechanical engineer , I got crippled because of unsafe practices that were taught to me in my apprentice days back in 1966 . There was a simple solution but the government refused to supply the £6 bit of gear .


In 1974 I was nominated to go on a course to enable me to promogulate my Units HASAW spent two full days at the H&S place in London near Earls court finding out how to write my units SOP's wrt HASAW. On leaving HMF I undertook a NEEBS course in industrial safety & security . Too many folk get crippled or killed by others acts or omissions .

So long as the idea passes muster to my way of thinking and does not conflict with the makers info or any known legislation I'm all for doing things better & safer in novel ways so long at it is safe . .

Since getting crippled the government have paid me 43 years of 60 % disability war pension currently about £520 a month ... I'd have much rather kept my health and grown my own engineering business instead of being chucked on the scrap heap aged 27 yrs old .

Several of my motability cars required tyre rotations at set mileage intervals IIRC my old Jimmy , Zaferia and both Kia Sedona's .

Not only replacing tyres in pairs , both Sedona's new tyres had to be the ones specified by KIA and I think put in on the front . They also included rotating the spare wheel .

When I was right young I had a diesel Lancia Dedra, and before I gave up on garages, I ended up at a tyre place, they changed the tyres, and put them back on with a dugga dugga, stripping the threads on one or two wheel nuts.

I was young, I was naive, they got the tap set out and in some capacity rectified the problem.

Twenty years later..... I would be going mental with them.

Live and learn.

In the very late 90's I bought a 1963 Commer.

I couldn't get the wheel nuts of of one side, for love nor money.

I had a spider, a very long scaff pole, and an obese female friend.

Well, suffice to say, her bouncing up and down on it, cracked all eight nuts.

But not mine.

You next problem if you actually get the bolts out - the spigot! (the wheel stuck on the hub spigot)

I have struggled no resorted to sledge hammering nearly new car wheels off three year old cars.

Rotary wire brush if the are corroded is a must - as they will always get worse.

This is the point where even I am always tempted at a bit of grease.

If the manufacturers specified lube on wheel studs they'd have to do that in the factory too. Think of the cost to the shareholders. :deadpan:
