Oh yes - virtually identical. Is the top gearbox a back gear or a planetary gear set? I’ve seen both on these types of drill, mine has a back gear which heavily reduces speeds by about 5:1.

erm... I've got no idea... pretty quick I guess, as soon as they can shove a load more coal in
I don't know how long the coal take to start burning... I used to sell beef tallow (lard) to a place that sold their rubbish veg oil/fat/lard onto a power station - it was cheaper than coal, they apparently squirted it in and it was so hot inside the furnace the lard/fat would instantly explode into flames and disappear... so I'm guessing they can step up the burn rate of coal pretty quickly
gas power plants can increase/decrease production really quickly, so I'm guessing the rest of the system water/steam etc. responds really quickly to heat input (but I am just guessing here)
starting up from cold takes ages, but it's much quicker when everything is already hot/up to pressure

Nothing 'wrong' as such. Just looks a bit lightweight to be putting 750kg on. Doesn't look like it's braked either so if the drill weighs 750kg it's definitely above the legal limit for an unbraked trailer. It's also right at the front so I imagine the nose weight is considerably more than allowed too!

A bit annoyed - the tin of paint I bought for the drill today is a completely different, much lighter colour. Not pleased.
The power feed box has been stripped, one pin was seized and required drilling out, that was a fun task. I will now need to clean and prime this before I rebuild the internals.

Hard to tell what the original colour is by you photos. Best place to look would be underneath the base casting or under the switch box, less chance of being faded by the sun.

The correct colour is a blue grey. I don’t really mind though, I paint things the colour I like

Today I cleaned up the internals of the skew gear which controls the table rise/fall. It was full of grease and was turning very slowly. The gears were painted too - not sure why this had been done, was the light blue repaint not original. Now it is degreased, oiled and works like a dream.

I cleaned the table bracket, the column, and the rise/fall bracket, and after a telling off about taking up too much floor space, I decided to put some components back together.
This will complicate painting but consolidates the work and makes it easier to work on freeing the spindle, which as of yet is a mystery area. Once again the engine crane proves its usefulness.

So every time I do a tidy up I get asked 'What have you bought now?'

I scrapped 2 cars & they thought great, he's tidying up the yard! Then I arrived home with a log booked rally car plus enough spares to fill a small shipping container!
So every time I do a tidy up I get asked 'What have you bought now?'
Tidying is both a blessing and a curse. You tidy up and then... hmm, I could probably fit another machine in here!
The table rise/fall mechanism works well. I got the spindle free, that was a total pain to do but all’s well now. I’ll need to lie the drill down to do the counterweight again but no problem.
The power feed box is clean and stripped, I’m going to refit the components so I know how they sit, then leave them safely there. There were loads of chips in the bottom, grease is useless in this application as it holds swarf and actually feeds it into the mechanism - not good.

Some images of progress. I chose a different colour paint, and reassembled the automatic feed gearbox. It’s simpler to have it all back together and complete than in a box, for both space saving and memory issues! I love the new colour, can’t wait to pick the lettering out (:
That looks like 'compressor blue', a nice bright colour for machinery. In a previous job I had to paint 2 huge frick refrigeration screw compressors every year, using that colour so I've used gallons of it!

In the new year I’ve got a welding unit coming up as part of my course and I asked if I could bring something in which needs welding, to which they said yes.
I’ll be making this - a backing plate to mount the motor onto the column. There are two tapped holes already there but I’d like something which looks original, hence the arced pieces to hug the column. If I can get the column primed and painted in that time it would be cool, not sure yet though.

Also I have managed to seriously damage my iPhone, breaking the screen and the rear camera glass has fallen out so I’m afraid it’s front facing pics from now on in, just before you all get spooked by reverse text etc
