Yes, removed the gel/grit coat and scored, also chamfered the edges to give a smooth transition onto the angle.

Nat made anything today, but after work and food I rebored an MG xpag block. Nothing special in that (this is the second one I've done in the same weeks), but the thing was allready +10, with a fair bit of wear. I bored it +20, four thou or less cut. It measures up ok, 2.5 thou to hone out, so hopefully the off wear mark will dissapear.
Chuffed.

Ah but that is not what it is. It is actually a chair for the apprentice crewman, if he doesn't come up to scratch he gets to sit in that chair, only problem is he gets strapped in and it is then attached to the fleet of creels and he gets to see first hand how the shooting table works and how the creels fish at the bottom of the sea.@Hood That's a unique position for the helm chair

Limited turning time today, but managed to turn the barrel for this. Cosmetic manufacturing imperfection in the tyre tread end cap, so messed about with that briefly, one for the discounted seconds pile.
Luckily I have another, which is spot on.
Bought this off Hitch and I have to say, it's awesome. Really high quality, I thought the H shifter was just a cool feature, but the way the barrel has been machined it works so smooth and nice!

Meanwhile in the apprentice lathe corner, I had a bit time to play this afternoon, so I turned a bit aluminium to make a leather ‘pokey tool thing’. It’s for those occasions when I need something to stab leather with, but also keep the tool in my hand while sewing.
I drilled and tapped an Allen bolt on the side, so I can change the tip (needle for display purposes only). First real attempt at threading something, and knurling too.
I think I can best describe the experience of turning aluminium this way, it is a metal that seems to think it has an opinion when it comes to turning it. Your job is to convince it that it doesn’t.

It's a Miggy, had it since late 80's.
Been sitting for some years, weak arc and lots of porosity whatever I tried.
Stripped it down a few days ago going over all connections and fixed a gas leak in the wire feeder. That brought it back to life again

They are great little machines. I have had mine since the late 80’s too and it’s been a little gem. I fitted a Euro conversion a few years back and that gave it a new lease of life as the original one had simply worn out.
It’s only a tiny thing but it’s great for thin stuff. I’d never get rid of it!

I still got the original torch. When Esab discontinued it I bought the last stock of tips. They were 6£ each then...
Still have a few left so it will be a euro conversion when I run out or something else fails.

Nothing special, fitted the new QC toolpost to my M300, had to machine the stud down and cut an M12 thread to fit the topslide. Once fitted it gave me chance to try out my new tool height gauge, no messing about find the centre height anymore
Did start making a new top nut with a handle so I can swivel the toolpost easily. I was given a 36mm dia bar of 'something that doesn't rust' by my BIL so made a start but had to stop as getting late and didn't want neighbours complaining, will finish on the weekend

A bit of origami, the baffle cover for where the exhaust from the heater passes through the shed wall.
Just got to round off the corners, weld the top section(s) [won't be today, I can hear the grass rustling as it grows so it's 'first haircut' time
], a couple of coats of VHT paint and we'll be good to go.

It was yesterday but...
First job was to plasma cut out some sides for a roller from 12mm 5083
I then welded them to some flat so that I could pop into the Chiron to take the bore out to 1 1/4" and then decided to also take 1.5mm off the outside to clean it up.
Next was to make a pin from F51 Duplex, put it in the CNC lathe but things just went wrong with the CNC control, first it wouldn't jog so restarted, now it jogged but spindle wouldn't work, restarted and homing wouldn't work so safe to say the control has finally died and I will now start stripping it out in preparation for fitting the new control I have.
So back to old school methods using the manual lathe to make the pin, easy enough job but just takes a lot longer on the manual.
Pin is 150mm OAL, 1 1/4" main Dia and M20 thread.
Started on welding up the bracket, I would have been doing this while the CNC was making the pin but as mentioned that was not to be
