It's silver...simply cos that was the metal paint I had in the shed.
Yep, brown would disguise it / blend it in - on the other hand if it's easily seen would it prove to be a deterrent

Not always the the case discreet is often better as big obvious security can often just make them more determined to be in as you " obviously " have something you want to protect , and you'll just make them look for another point of entry

On the coin boxes for the driers in my (long sold) launderette I put hasp and staple locking with the cheapest padlock. What wasn't apparent was the original circular pin lock was under the hasp along with a microswitch that triggered an extremely loud klaxon alarm

This Mamod came my way the other day. Almost original, just missing a "Meths" burner.

It was stiff to turn over, but it did move.

This engine caused a bit of a "Debate".
Some wanted to strip and fully restore it. But did not want to pay out to replace the hard to find and mucj money original stickers.
Some wanted to leave it as it was, as it was all original. But got upset when others wanted to run it.
Then there was the sober ones who wanted to clean it up, preserve it and run it.

Old, age suitable burners I have.

This is the firt hot run. The piston was stiff, as it was caked in brasso, lime scale and old oil.

I removed the con rod and cleaned the cylinder.
The pipes were roded clear of lime scale with a bit of Mig wire.
The boiler was filled with hot water and citric acid.

The steel was rubed with warm citric acid, then washed with hot water. Then a clear heat resistance coat applied.


For a small engine, the power is very good.

When I was about 10 my cousin had one of these, one day we decided to make the piston act like a cannon, so disconnected it from the flywheel.

We thought the pressure would build and fire the piston out. What we didn't realise that we had effectively closed off the steam valve from the boiler. After about 20 minutes of heating the boiler eventually exploded showering is with boiling water. I guess the pressure relief valve was stuck closed as the end of the boiler blew off.

Ahh, the good old days......

This 1850(ish) plane came my way for £2. I got it as a restoration project, teaching project and they are a good tool.

Besides, I had already squired a full set of irons for such a plane.

It had sat in a wet/leaking shed for about 30 years. So after a quick clean to remove the mould. I left it to re season on top of a set of racking. Knowing it would take 12 to 16 weeks to stabilise.


Unfortunately some one, who thought they knew better, placed it on top of a boiler to dry out.

The results.

A full bodt split on the fence.

Plus a a split and warping of the main body.
Meaning it was not worth repairing back to full use.

But yesterday some member came round to see what could be done, plus learn a few more tricks.

Manu choccy Hob Nobs were eaten.

Cleaning was with a off the shelf wax and dirt remover. Meths. Will work just as well.

The weight of the dirt which re moved was 2 1/4 oz. They weighed it.
Don't ask me why.

The brass rubbing plate is worn. That we agreed was not an issue. As it was age related. But as the body is split the tool is of no use.

This is the finish with 4 coats of oil.

Finished, the split is visable, it has gone right through the body.
The oil soaked paper will be wraped round the plane and sealed in a plastic bag and left for 48 to 72 hours. It will allow the oil to soak in more. So it can be buffed up a lot more.

I should of seen this comming. I know I should of not left it down MIS, when I knew I was not avaiable for a few days.

Not quite today, but this came to mind. It works but runs too fast to be usable as a screwdriver, even on low speed. A useful proof on concept though and I can reuse the adaptor plate on an 18V drill

Was squeezing past the car in the garage in my dirty overalls, not sure what was stuck to them but this was the result.

Fairly bad scratch in the clear coat, easy to feel with a nail, but not through to the base coat.

I would normally sand it down a bit with 1000 and then 3000 but I was short of time so dug out the G3 and polisher.

A minute or so of polishing later.

I can still just feel the scratch but it will do for the time being.

Steering rack gaitors are a service item every two years on my Caterham for the same reason - no idea where they are made, but wherever it is, they obviously don't consider the effects of UV . . .

Is it not just that things supposed to be made of rubber just aren't , Did upper and lower arms on the rangie a little over two years ago .... last mot advisory on ball joints rubbers gone on both sides and have you noticed drive shaft boots have very little give , seem more like plastic than rubber .

They poke out the sides into fresh air . . . I've yet to inspect them this year, as its not been used for the last two years, apart from 7 mile to and from the MOT.

Reputtied some windows, I imagine you're supposed to chip the whole lot off rather than just redo sections but all the rest of it was still in good nick.


It's so much easier with a proper putty knife, now if only I could wash this linseed stink off my hands.
