Some of the heavy lift tower cranes powered by massive engine driven generators were also on daily oil sample tests . Can't have 8 ton of load left hanging 150 foot in the air because the genny's engine has shed a shell bearing etc.
First time in30 years I’ve heard of an oil test for this purpose.

Two of my engines are on carbs - my old Pug 106 on standard carb and my trials car running a 1600 xflow on an SU HIF - not had to go inside either for a while, but when I've had to, both were nice and clean. Crossflow valves were - I have the nice and clean head of one of the exhausts on my desk after I retrieved it from the sump after it hammered a hole in a piston when my mate, who borrowed the car, ignored the tapping noise coming from the engine . . .

Standard sort of thing for industry, transport fleets etc - I just can work the relevance to tin pellets dangling in a tank doing nothing useful?
I did see one lot (might even be the brocket one) that claimed they worked in the presence of iron - ie the steel petrol tank . . . which should be interesting in plastic tanks . . .
Regarding the Hurricane claim - something on another forum made me smile - a reminder the gov wanted everyone to eat carrots at that time so you could see in the blackouts . . . a rather more believable claim as the contain Vitamin A, without which you can have eye problems . . .

Ah I never knew they used that to find out the bearings, Quite smart not sure why I didn't think of it myselfUse it on the turbine engines they can tell you which bearing is going to give trouble By different trace elements
Thanks for reply you obviously had a good drive. I'm sorry but I had to check results and was pleased to see that a liege won the class. Ray and Trevor are two long standing acquaintances of mine and can be very determined competitors. The best result I got ,in a very short 'career', was 2nd to Ray in the Allen trial a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I started car trials too late in life and found it a struggle to maintain the car , just old age . one thing I didn't like about the Liege was the lack of chassis behind the drivers seat which meant that everything was supported by the f/G tub. I like Lieges - I was a student when they appeared - remember giving the first one a serious coat of looking at when he had a stand at the kit-car show at Stafford county showground. I keep thinking what I could do with one to make it so much better at trialling - they always seem to be working so hard to get up a section I simply drove up. I do look every now and again, but with limited numbers built and the amount of pounds they go for when they do come up . . . I keep throwing my 500 quid (inc trailer) Dutton at the scenery
