I was correct thanks. That is a 12mm tool the 10mm one don't hold the inserts properly so they break

I persisted with a new 4mm bit now it is done. I am like a dog with a bone. Bloody expensive breaking all these bits

You must still have some alignment issues.

Could have needed a pilot hole

didn't shove it in and it got hot seized up and snapped did it or lack of coolant and didn't pull it out often enough to clear the swarf that's the normal reason

the rota broach dont need a pilot hole, it was nearly through when it snapped and I was going slow with plenty of oil too,

That looks like one of those 'coolant through' cutters, like @Hood uses on his Chiron?

What size broach was it? If it was a 10mm I’ve broken a couple recently, one within a second of it starting to cut . In a mag drill though, not the lathe. On close inspection it looked as if the flutes were machined very deep as there was only a few thou thickness left...

probably grabbed at the last minute breaking through and snapped. it its quite common when drilling unfortunately

This was a 13mm broach but it was a long one and was in deep

Shouldn't the coolant feed internally with those and keep the "plug" lubricated as well?

13mm hole you could have done with a 4-5mm pilot them a 13mm drill.
