Now that is a great idea just some 12mm I.d tube with a cut along it?or something else

As you say. 12mm I'd turn Ed to size and slit it

From the looks of it the current spacer can be removed and make one sized to fit the bore.

Remember it is not just physical size of the bar, you will need sufficient movement on the tool holder to get the tip to the correct height.

I just need to find the correct boring bar for that holder then save messing about. Not convinced 2mm wall will squeeze so easy like the thin shim already in the holder

I used the boring bar today chips flying every where. Do you slow the lathe for boring or just leave the speed as it was for turning.

No leave as is, it is a small radius so needs high RPM to keep the surface speed up.

Switching with the switch isolated should help extend it's life though.

It had only.got.to last as.long as.the 1960s motor. Just need @Seadog to let me in on the chuck.mod now

Is it not just a tapped hole through the backplate and a brass slugs to protect the spindle thread

I'm assuming it's to stop the Chuck unscrewing

The front grease cover is relieved to provide a locking diameter. A collar is made which is a close fit on the spindle diameter and backplate spigot. No dimensions I'm afraid, just photos.
The collar looks to be held on to the backplate by a single grub screw. When the clamp screw is tightened it grips both the backplate spigot and spindle.
