I have just purchased a Boxford Lathe

What do you mean "grade"?

Mine were a direct replacement, I had to machine the slot but that was a simple process when I had a way of holding them.
At the time I had very little tooling with the Bangood cutoff tool it would be a doddle.

I thought they were acme threads though, am I mistaken?

Square usually I seem to recall.

Mine were just a straight forward whitworth thread.
Screw one out and take a look at it.

Not grade should have said grade. But I see now you had to machine the thinner part in the middle

Need to knock the pin out to remove the whole screw

Different from mine then.
I was just able to screw them out.
It's a simple job to reverse the jaws on my chuck.

actually i did not take the rear part off of this chuck i should take another closer look

The front grease cover is relieved to provide a locking diameter. A collar is made which is a close fit on the spindle diameter and backplate spigot. No dimensions I'm afraid, just photos.
The collar looks to be held on to the backplate by a single grub screw. When the clamp screw is tightened it grips both the backplate spigot and spindle.

looking at doing this do you think just drilling the chuck and using a bolt it would lock sufficienly onto the spindle? or would it in time damage the threads?

Someone did that with one of my backplates.
I'd be wanting a slug of something soft to contact the threads if I stuck a bolt in it.

yes defiantly or the thread will get damaged and the lathe will be fooked! the collar is the better idea

It's easy ,3 phase straight through in position 1 , No phases connected in position 2 , and 2 phases swapped over in position 3.

Or for a single phase motor, live to the top two, neutral to the bottom, top to one winding and it's return straight to neutral, other two to the other winding so only one reverses.
