Found a small plastic tank and had some gash rebar from building job so lashed this up



30 ltrs of water and 1/2kg of soda crystals + my 12amp battery charger

not much has needed more than a few hours to derust

3 Jaw chuck was in more of a "state" to start with than the 4 jaw but has cleaned up ok, once i can mount it on the spindle i will know how accurate it is

Spindle nose is one of my my biggest concerns so i started on that yesterday



I started with citrix acid paste last night



looking better already this morning so hopefully by tonight should be clean

I traced over the drawing of the fixed steady in the manual. If you can supply the dimensions on attached, I can scale it to the correct size and add a dxf file.

For the spindle centre above the ways, perhaps measure both to the bottom and to the top of the spindle flange and the centre will be halfway between.

If your chucks havent been stripped down after de-rusting you might want to do something to flush out any of the electrolyte left inside so they don't rust up internally.

Pete i bought a drum of this a while back


everything gets rinsed then blasted by an airline dipped in a bucket of this then airdried , its great stuff

Hi the for center height i used a mt4 fixed center measured a few times and it came out at 151mm dead

also got the measurements for the bed



wont claim it mine but I double checked it

After cleaning off the paste and a bit of attention from an oiled kitchen scrubber i think the effort was worth it



the front of the chuck register has some dings but I checked it with a dial indicator and there is 0 runout so really happy about that

The back face (larger of the two, the one with all the holes in it) is a register face. The chuck should pull up tight to that when secured. Bumps or dings in that are undesirable. The smaller face should never see contact so its appearance does not matter.

His spindle nose is an A-taper, a slightly cheaper version of the D1-x camlock type.

Scaled drawing of the ways traced from the manual attached. With 50mm between them, the centre height is 1/2mm out but the left/right dimension is 3mm different to the real thing (your drawing). You wouldn't try to cut the way height or vees into your blank anyway, so that does not matter.

dxf attached. I recommend printing it out on paper (measure it with a ruler in both X- and Y- once printed to make sure your printer is not distorting it), cutting it out with scissors and doing a test fit. The outline should be 5mm deeper at the bottom than the ways, so cut 5mm off the paper template and check the centre height lines up (maybe do not cut the centre out of the paper template).

Drawing of salient dimensions attached. The parts that hold the fingers scale to 34mm. I do not think you can get 35mm plate, so 40mm would be the minimum to cut it from, but that leaves it a bit skinny at the base, so if you cut it out from 50mm plate and then put it on the Bridgeport diet, the base should be OK (50mm across at the base is based on on a Colchester Bantam steady).

Well the strip down is progressing



im not looking forwards to stripping this down but due to missing wiper on power shaft bottom full of chips



now the real question is having got this far its really tempting to give it a coat of paint.....

I think the plan is everything that is rusty now gets derusted and cleaned then back together if I really like then maybe a repaint in the future when i have less projects on the go
