Bummer. My new chuck has got a crack. Not sure how they’ve managed it, there doesn’t seem to be any damage to the jaw.

Is this safe to use? Should I grind away the damaged area to stop the crack spreading?

Meh - it's a 4-jaw. If it's not bell-mouthed it's good to go.

It’s amazing how small the burrs are that will stop a jaw going in and out smoothly

pretty happy with that. Probably 5-6 hours put into it though.

First rule, check clearance, if it clears, it's OK, taking out the gap piece for nothing is a waste of time, on my Edgewick, it's a heavy lump!

10” diameter

it is a tad big but try finding a 4 jaw L00 chuck.
My old chuck that came with the lathe is 9”

Two safety checks that have stuck with me since metalwork at school.

1. Never leave the chuck key in the chuck.
2. Always rotate the chuck before starting the machine.

There was a chuck key in the roof of the metalwork room at Howden School. A lad had left it in the chuck and started the lathe, it launched it out skywards. Embedding itself in the roof lining some 20’ up. The teacher (great guy) taped a Chuck key to his hand for every lesson after that.

And that the toolpost's going to clear at the end of the cut, check everything's bolted to the faceplate securely, don't ask...

Citric acid, a bit of scotchbrite and finished up the mating/sliding sections of the jaw recess with a bench stone and diamond file.

Swap electrolysis for the citric and much the same - I still have some small slip stones (down to 1/8 x 3/16 x 2", and some half-rounds etc. but getting worn to a sliver now) I lucked upon at a carboot years ago that are really handy for deburring and taking out dings.

I’m gonna order some slip stones, I see Da components do them but some are in back order
