I was thinking most of my acquired stuff is pre the net. Not so sure though, or of the split...

I've bought linbins, I've bought Lidl 48 drawer things like this to sort nuts and bolts:

I've got Tesco crates, I've repurposed oil 20L, rectangular oil tubs...

I keep thinking, "sort a box a night", where to put the sorted stuff though?

Yeah, he'll send you the money by money transfer, overpay, then ask you for the difference refunded.... and you'll never get the original money. Or some variant.

It is overwhelming dealing with clutter. I get overwhelmed when I look in the garage or our back room where we store stuff. I'm determined to make progress when oldest moves out next month though. I honestly don't want to spend the last years of my life surrounded by so much stuff.

Start with the easy stuff: books you've read, things that are broken, things that you really don't love. If you just bin/rehome/sell 6 things a week the progress will build up.

I try to run to the rule if I haven't used it in four years out it goes unless it is high value over say £500 to currently buy a new one , preferably for a few pounds with no gripe from me .. no interest ........ hit it with disc cutter separate to different metals , scrap the plastic to the local amenity ,once I have a 45 gallon barrel full .
Then put the sorted metals in 30 litre planters to take it to the scrappies 10 at a time .
I got £76 IIRC last time I took a load to the scrappies . Cutting armatures up to get the better clean copper proved worthwhile as I had very cheap £18 for 50 thin slitting discs that last ages .

Having read all of the above- quite a bit of it resonates with me.
I have stored some stuff for 30 years- but can I find the pesky thing exactly when I need it? Guaranteed it will be needed two days or a week after it gets disposed of…

But I really like the ‘get rid of 6 things a week’ - that sounds manageable- and I do know much pit won’t be missed after the initial pain, and I will very much enjoy the extra space in the workshop.

Thanks @roofman - it seems you have protected many of us from ourselves- perhaps we all ought to send you some ’stuff’ as a reward

I try to be ruthless about stuff otherwise it just accumulates. The tip on the island was a great source, the main problem I had was getting rid of what I took home.

I've a load of 110V gear to be shifted, it's no use to me and pretty unwanted here.

But first, as far as hoarding goes you lot are AMATEURS!

My garage was already a tip when I had to further turn it upside down to make access for fitting the new cu and EV cabling. I had to take a little angle iron chipboard shelf unit down that I'd made to drill through the slab etc. Over the weekend I managed to refit the uprights and just ONE shelf, luckily

That’s not a lot of gear, it’s just a mess. If you could be arsed most of that would condense down into a few stacking boxes. A mad weekend and a bit of determination would sort that.

Just to add that FBMP buyer behaviour in general local buy/sell general items has definitely changed over the last couple of years .....lots of no shows, more price chiselling, careless "is it available" msgs as people scroll on their phone (many ads now say they won't reply to those), people that start a chat and suddenly leave it without a word.
It's just the way it is. Block and move on...the genuine buyer comes along eventually (but IMO furniture items always hang around for ages and it's difficult to achieve any kind of decent money. ). My record was selling an old £40 vice - about 8 buyers over a period of 6 months all said they'd come to look and others offered £20 which I rejected. The last one who bought it actually turned up and paid 40. But all that time I didn't care bc it was sitting in a pile in the garage doing nothing. It's a lot of messing about for 40 quids though
