Are you getting full rotations one way but not the other, or are you just trying to bounce it one way but finding it wind for the other? If it’s only been rocked one way but solid the other there’s every change it’s FUBAR and you’re only rocking the play out of it

i thought of that when i went through the outer fitting like alternator and pumps etc. but the impeller is only rubber and you would think there would be slight movement, evena bounce back. but its solid.

i will check it if all else fails though as i sod yo get to..

I have a funny feeling you have counter and clockwise engines, if this is the case the starters will be different and you may have repaired and fitted the wrong starter to the wrong engine,pure armchair speculation of course. Jabsco pumps can bind if you reverse them.

Years ago I bought a van that had broken the teeth off the starter ring when trying to start it. The engine had been removed as it would not rotate in the correct direction, no obvious bounce but admittedly it was a diesel and water is not compressible. The head gasket had cracked and one cylinder was half full on water

Normally when you have counter rotating props on a twin screw it will be the gearbox that is the opposite hand rather than the engine.

If you’re only rocking it, and it moves one way but locks up the other, I would be pulling the head and sump to see what’s come adrift and is locking it up

They have fibre timing gears that can fail, only reason I can think which could stop them turning both ways.

They have the late big valve B20 heads I see, nice. They can turn either direction when there are no issues. If by chance you are getting rid of them let me know please would be interested in the heads.

i will but i doubt it as there good engines, i am prepared to rebuild them.

Ok I have realised they are basically 240 car engines, Volvo surely would not have made the investment of building an anticlockwise version..

and if different rotation then the inlets and outlet manifolds would be on different sides i would of thought.

uopto know i have been told that it could be down to the gear box i jammed in forward.

that still confuses me a bit but i agree as all else fails me wee brain , i will faff about this week and see what i can do there.

Whats different with the inlet system, on right hand motor is it just air cleaners on 90 bend or shorter inlet manifold
Does not look like it got a lot of love before you rescued it, can see why you want them out, good tidy of wiring, pipes, etc & then some sound proofing, whats the rest like (photos)

@W.olly `s engines may well both turn the same way Jerry , its merely something that needs checking out, reverse starters are available for the AQ130. The B14 and 16 engines are used in cars and reverse cam gears are available for those.

As said it turns wrong way. anti clockwise. starteers were fitted one is good as i fixed that and had it in the dodgy engine. now on the good one other is going to be refurbed.

it has been sat for 6-7 years as the chap that sold was keeping it for sentimental values.

After tonight and help i will be releasing the gear selector in the drive head to ensure its in neutral and try again on the engine.

They are a very strong engine that will rev at 5000rpm all day long. They are a basic pushrod engine so no reason why they would normally only turn one direction. Timing gears are known to break, cam wears but that’s about it. Typically they will go forever.

Look at the blades on the props themselves. Are the blades on both props angled the same way relative to the axis of rotation?

props are opposite rotations, old engines like these are easy to make rotate in either direction.
we used to see a lot of GM and Ford reverse rotation small black V8s all the way up to the late 80s models.

I don’t know enough about those drives to know if they are reversible.

That would suggest the engines are likely to rotate in the same direction, but the gearing arrangement results in opposite directions of rotation of the props themselves. Are there any model labels or ratings plates on the outdrives themselves?
