engine only rotates in one direction ???

I have started to get the engines going on my boat, engines being VP AQ130 with 270 outdrives. Fixed the starter motors, well one, but one is goosed.

Anyway, these engines rotate clockwise, one engine will rotate anti clockwise but not clockwise. Tested by hand crancking it.

All i can think of is that the outdrive is jamming it in reverse but i have messed with it and still wont go clockwise.

I will look further into the outdrive but is there anything else that can cause this.

edit to say the starter motor acts like the engine is seized. but turn anti clockwise by hand still, not as it should clockwise.

engine will only rotate anti clockwise, not clockwise as it should, when hand cranking. not looked at the prop rotation actaully.

What I meant was are they both supposed to run in the same direction, on a lot of twin engined marine stuff one engine runs clockwise the other counterclock.

Check the manual before you do much turning the wrong way, sometimes I have seen dire warnings not to, mainly to do with timing chain tensioners as I remember.

starter is good.

engine turns by hand in one direction, wrong one. i only turned it to see if it moves and it does, very little. when it didnt turn i checked the other direciton to see if it was seized.

they look like Volvo car based engines, i doubt they would bother to make one run the "other" direction, can you disconect the shaft from the engine to see if the engine is the prob or further down the line ?...ps, i know zip about boats other than they float

Have you tried removing the spark plugs and then turning the engine the correct way? It may have water on top of the piston

i thought of that when i went through the outer fitting like alternator and pumps etc. but the impeller is only rubber and you would think there would be slight movement, evena bounce back. but its solid.

i will check it if all else fails though as i sod yo get to..

I suspect @8ob is right about the props, this is done to eliminate propwash or youd have about 30 degrees of rudder in all the time to eliminate it.

i havnt yet but will do that. though on compression like that it would bounce and not feel so solid like seized.

Remove the out drive, and see if its the engine or the bit on the end

i will be removing engine and drives soon enough, but i wanted to check the drives are good before removing to clean and service them.
