Chademo, which is a Japanese standard, was intended to provide vehicle to grid functionality for backup power in the event of a natural disaster. That's why it's very easy to suck 360v out of the Leaf pack to power an inverter.

Bit like our I3 rex, has a motorbike engine in the boot that charges battery when you get to 6%. Went for it as backup due to range anxiety but in truth never used it except to try it to see what happens and when it kicks in itself on a maintenance cycle. put fuel in the tank once in 3 years.

I'll get one when I can buy a van that can do 500 miles on a 5 minute charge and carry 1.5 ton!

Maybe not the 5 minute charge but I need 300 miles as a minimum with a ton or so on board

@Kayos I'm watching the Rivian closely its due to be launched overseas soon 300+miles range and 800kg bed capacity so not far off what you need and 5000kg towing capacity too. Very nice practical design.

Hideous looking but shows the tech is approaching. I might record my mileage and fuel usage next week with a quick drive over a weigh bridge to see what I'm actually dragging around

Its different but reminds me of the discovery 3 when it came out it was a total marmite design and tore the disco community apart with such a dramatic style shift. I fell for that instantly though and the more look at the Rivian especially the videos it does it for me but agree it won't suit everyones taste!

Technically if it does what it says to he tin when its delivered it will be pretty awesome.

+1 I think a defender would be great with an electric motor. I have dibs on my first discovery 3 with its current owner with a view to one day converting it. Was the best disco I ever owned and would make the perfect dog walking car for us.

When I look at our i3s motor packaging it looks almost perfect for such transplants it has 190ps which is same as Origional tdv6 too. Batteries could go between chassis rails and where 3rd row seats are.

You certainly wouldn't want to be unfortunate enough to be rammed from behind in the fog by one of those. If you'll excuse the pun!

Actually reading further they start at $69000,
£53000ish. Not bad for McLaren performance!

PS. They would do well to start a recovery company. All those precious metals splattered all over the place and all they need to be safe is an earth lead!

will be interesting to see the final price of the Rivian. If it's in the region of what it says then that's probably around the new LR defender in midrange spec so some stiff competition in the US where LR have sights aimed high really looking forward to the next few years.

Watched the movie First Man which I really enjoyed but there was one bit that made me stop and think, it was only 58 years before the first man in space and the first powered flight.

Id dissagree with that space flight has more to do with maritime technology (specifically submarines) than areospace. Sure areonautics helped buy introducing us to light weight materials meaning we were to be able to overcome the weight issues with fuel and the shuttle etc. But most of the other tech apart from rockets which oddly enough is defense technology not areospace with most of the rest coming from from the marine sector. If lightweight materials uses had been discovered by other means it would not have been nessecary for the human race to have flown before it conducted its first space flight. So it didnt come about as rapidly as everyone thinks. So with that in mind and the first submarine being built in 1776 it took us nearly 200 years to get into space not to mention the thousands of years of development of ships before that and 1000s of years of developments of rockets right the way through from the ancient chinese dynastys through to the modern day. It was theorised as early as the 1648 that space existed as a vacume at some point above the planets surface with an official estimate of the height being worked out in 1665.

So i really dont think change is going to be as quick as we all think.
