I asked for tco, that includes fuel and road tax per month...

Anyone can buy a car for 400 quid and leave it sitting on the drive and say 'look my car cost less than yours', people forget they have to pour expensive refined dinosaur remnants into it.

I looked into this recently as I'd like to justify having an electric.

After ~5yrs of ownership, with the milage I do (~6000-8000) my old 3series estate has cost me, in total, including fuel and everything, and assuming it's worth only ~£500 now, (from memory) a bit over £2000 a year.

I hadn't compared with lease costs for new EVs but s/h small EVs came out cheaper for sure. Possibly closer to £1500-£2000 p/a. A lot of guess work for those though.

However... I tend to do longer motorway journeys as well as the short trips and I appreciate the space, comfort, carrying capacity and "road trip" worthy distance per tank/charge.

If I needed a short commute/runaround, I think things would, most likely tip into the EV favour. I'd certainly like one.

Because sooner or later it makes financial sense, unless you particularly like spending your retirement rolling around in old bangers that need fixing (either £££ or your valuable time) and that gas your grandkids.

Zoe is the same per month as the Dacia, or less, because the Dacia has crap residuals and the Zoe has a massive dealer subsidy. Then you have to pay to put fuel in the Dacia so the Zoe will work out cheaper. No one buys cars anymore (not unless they are mad, or they do more than 20k/year), it's the monthlies that matter... You let some faceless finance company worry about the depreciation.

You seem to be in the fortunate position where paying a large amount (£200 is no small change to a lot of people when they are either on pension of minimum wage) is acceptable as you can easily afford. There are millions who can't yet still need affordable transport. No everybody wants PCP, a new car, and so on as they are more than happy to have an "old banger" that is paid for. That means there will always be a market for cheap cars whether IC or petrol.

I do 54 miles/leg of my commute with charging at each end. I have a 2013 Chevy volt that does 45 miles of that run on electric. I use 1/2 gallon a day for those 108 miles.

Yet if I need to drive to Italy tomorrow, it can do that with zero planning.

I think the point is EVs work for some people but for others more development is needed before they can make the switch, and others just like engines!
I'm in the latter clubs but I can definitely understand the benefits for some people.
I would enjoy it while it lasts though as running an EV for free can't last forever once they become more mainstream and revenue from combustion engines decreases.

Honestly there's no feeling more smug than watching the sunlight shine on your solar PV which then fills your car up, whilst you get on with something else... I'm sure the government will bring in per-mile road pricing soon to replace the lost revenue.

Nope, BIK on ev charging of personal vehicles was removed from the budget last year and came into effect April 2018

I doff my cap! You've obviously got a system going on that works well in your situation. Our local paper ran a story a while back about a guy who lived in a mid terrace with no drive and a bmw i3. He was complaining that his neighbours were complaining about him daisy chaining 3 extension leads down the pavement to charge it up!!

With daily milage like that, I can see how an EV comes into its own.

But, how would the annual costs for my lower (no commute but generally longer trips mileage) compare? I worked out a comparison with a s/h small EV and it came in at a bit less than my running costs. And that was assuming it could do long trips and had zero fuel costs. But anything hybrid or larger sized that I could strap a 17' canoe to or bung a couple bikes in was a different story. They tend to be Megabucks to buy (if they exist) with steep (or unknown) depreciation.

Yea, that's another reason I'd like one!

P.S, I totally get your point that many people don't/can't work out a total cost of ownership. I didn't realize how much things stacked up until I did. But what I worked out suggested that EVs aren't cheaper to run for everyone. Yet.

The reality is that for everyone in the UK who doesn't have off street allocated parking, and ev doesn't work. And until we get 300 mile range and rapid charging hubs that are properly equipped and have enough capacity to cater for the throughput, those people will be running petrol cars.

We had some charge points at our place in Leeds they were free initially which was nice but then they handed it over to ChargeMaster who charge their standard rate with no staff subsidy. Not complaining it was nice whilst it lasted and if you have it then its a nice perk but don't factor it into any costings. Council car parks often have free ones run by Npower or at least they do around Sheffield. I use one in the city centre, I drive in at 0500 plug it in walk to gym and by the time I come back its fully charged for free and before 0800 when parking charges kick in. I then shift the car to my work parking ready for home freeing up the charging for other users works perfect but I doubt will last!

Better stop using the oil for making disposable plastic packaging and for personal road transport. A world without jet fuel will be difficult to live in by modern standards.
