Yep not there yet for your usage and may be some time, if your day to day mileage at the moment is over 200 miles you need to think really think before jumping into an BEV particularly about charge points which is not practical for many at the moment. If its less than 200 miles you don't need to worry so much as its charged overnight and filled up ready to go every morning. 500 miles in our BEV would be less than £20 in electric but of course taxes will change that in the future.

If you had charge points at work or home then you’d hardly need to use a station elsewhere to charge, only on longer journeys which for the majority of folk is not often.

+1 I think a defender would be great with an electric motor. I have dibs on my first discovery 3 with its current owner with a view to one day converting it. Was the best disco I ever owned and would make the perfect dog walking car for us.

When I look at our i3s motor packaging it looks almost perfect for such transplants it has 190ps which is same as Origional tdv6 too. Batteries could go between chassis rails and where 3rd row seats are.

How about a motor connected to the PTO output on the transfer box that matches the speed somehow to work with the engine.

A hybrid TDI .. is that possible, it's still all magic to me

This is what annoys me about the push for electric, there is no such thing as most folk. I'm not alone in my needs or the way I use my vehicles

It's not about not wanting to change, at the minute the tech wont work for me or the millions like me

I can imagine the calls now "sorry love, I can't divert to come fix your leak, I've not got enough range"

range extenders are probably the answer we have it in our I3 but never use it. For commercials it would avoid the not enough range scenario.

They're developing fuel cells that work from hydrocarbons, they would be ideal in hybrids or BEVs as a range extender.

The best solution is they all use the same size battery and you pull in to a recharge station and they swap it out for a new one. Like a remote controlled car battery we all had as kids

Had we been alive and the internet invented in early 1900's a few in here would be making the same arguments against ice vehicles compaired to horse drawn carriages,

more like a few thousand, you just said 500 miles for the week not day sure you would have AMPle time to recharge between uses

There was one done a 109 ffr series 3 was made in to a hybrid by the army in the 80's for sneaking about the place its at the dunsfold collection and im wanting to go have a look at it as im concidering doing the same thing. Possibly conecting the motor into the back of my fairy overdrive in my series 3. Its claim to fame because it uses the pto hole in the gearbox to conect it to the drivetrain its the only land rover in history that can bump start its self.

There will have to be a way of crediting for what charge there is left in the battery you are taking out of the car.

I guess they’d say that’s your tough luck for not using all of it

You need the type of overdrive with a PTO dog, not all of them had it.

Was thinking could have a new shaft and back cover with a mechanical seal pocket machined to allow it to pass through the back of the overdrive to connect to a motor.

Ok so 160 miles longest single journey

You send me a link to an electric car/van that can do 160 miles on a charge, with me and a passenger, 800kg of kit and tools including a triple extension ladder and a pipe rack that costs £4k (what I paid for my disco) or even £10k and I will buy it now
