Primary air is turned down for that photo. Just running on the secondary/tertiary air there. Easier to see the content without larger flames.

But you have secondary air, so the burn continues farther up, and you are not wasting fuel.

Indeed. I usually only turn the primary down fully last thing though. Nice to see a bit of flame on the logs themselves too. This is a photo with both controls approx. half open.
Occasionally, as in that first photo, it does look much nicer with just the secondary open. It allows a better close-up photo of the firebox with the primary closed though, I think.

I can honestly say I'm so glad I finally decided to stop being a wuss & suffer the mess & suchlike of getting this fireplace done. I'm still finding dust now from when the work was done, & I still need to do finishing touches on the fireplace, but when you're watching that stove running, it's so worth it. So comfy & calming, just sat here looking at this:

That method is what I've been using with these for starting the fire. Tried a few minor variations. This one seems to work well.
Three in a triangular configuration at the bottom, with a firelighter inbetween them, & one straddled atop them. Leave the bottom ashpan door open until the flue thermometer reaches a certain point, then close that bottom door & let the integrated airflow systems take over.
Saves faffing around with separate kindling.

I manage to halve what you have there.
Just being economical.
I'm currently experimenting with burning pellets in my rayburn.
Biscuit tin with holes in it type affair.
Having mixed results.

Half the fun is figuring out the best way to burn each fuel. Between logs, those other style of briquette & then these, they've all required slightly different technique & airflow settings.
I'm sure you'll figure out the best burn settings for those eventually.

Exactly how I do it.
Usually get it going on a few bit of 'hotmaxx' logs and a couple of bigger ones, then use proper logs.
You can tell a lot from a man's lounge carpet amd the selection of tools in the house. From yours I can tell you are a sensible single man that hasn't got a wife that insists on fully redecorating and recarpeting the house every other year whether it needs it or not.

Definitely going to be sticking with briquettes rather than logs, from now on. They burn well, & the door glass alone is a clear indication of how cleanly they burn. All I've done with the glass before lighting the fire today is give it a quick rub with a piece of dry tissue.
With logs, it'd have been a damp cloth dipped into wood ash, for cleaning the glass.

It's just wood chip under extreme pressure causes it to bind together.
