fitted a new clutch - judders really bad

The pilot bearing is not part of the clutch mechanism or flywheel. It is located in the end of the engine crankshaft and ensures the crankshaft and first motion gearbox shaft have the same axis of rotation.

im told there isnt one on these , only the auto has one

I would be mightily surprised if there were no spigot bearing or bush.

there is no reason at all for a auto box to have a pilot bearing, there is only a flex plate and torque converter, and the flat face of the converter gets bolted to the flex plate. part 13 absolutely is for the manual, and nowhere in that fiche does it say auto only. in fact that diagram shows a flywheel not a flex plate, so by definition it is for a manual.

They're not shown as part of the transmission because they're fitted to the engine.

The irony is the schematic shows a flywheel not a flexplate & ring gear!

Did the end of the gearbox shaft have a plain section for a bearing/bush to run on, or did it simply stop at the splines?

Manuals normally have a spigot bearing to support the input shaft, auto usually have this omitted and the torque converter uses it as a location for centring .... i know nothing about VWs tho !

Yeah, that's a spigotless setup.
I can't think of the last time I seen a FWD vehicle with a spigot bearing/bush.

The last person I know who had bad juddering with a new clutch, was a mate who fitted a cheap kit as he was selling the vehicle. He had to redo it with a decent quality kit before he sold it as the juddering was that bad!

You did fit a decent brand (LuK, Sachs, Borg & Beck, VW) from a reputable source?

Not all - had to fit one to the Rover engine I fitted in a RWD application - at least my crank had the hole for it - some don't.

I most certainly wasn't trying to ridicule you, but was trying to be helpful.
What this thread has highlighted is just how out of touch I've become.
The last clutch I fitted must be at least 30 years ago, and that would have
been on an HGV.
Things move on, and in some respects, we don't. So, really sorry if my
posts came across wrong.

Little story, truck with weird transmission fault, strange gearchanges etc, even had the dealer guy in to diagnose, confirmed gbox fault.
So I remove said gearbox/clutch and the spigot which was totally seized so the engine and gbox cold never disengage, gearbox went for recon and when I put it all back together it amazingly was all good again, they were as chuffed as punch at their diagnosis!
