fitted a new clutch - judders really bad

Totally off topic, but sort of relevant to lifting gearbox's and changing clutches laying on your back on your drive.

If you haven't already, check out Kevin Williams on the you tube. Just bench presses the box in and out, with the occasional onto the belly and yoik it up from there. I could barely lift the box out of my vivaro, let alone get it into position on my own, straight in for young Kev though, no messing about.

yeah he must be a beast , he lifts these golf boxes like theyre nothing , i can barley drag it along the floor

I did the transfer box on the 110 like that. Not my finest moment and I paid for it later

We all make mistakes, can happen to anyone, but as you say, I think you will have noticed that, but ..........

A few years ago we replaced the clutch on a friends Sierra. Needed to go out in the afternoon so got the thing on ramps at set to it. Took about an hour.
Got it all back together and sat on the garden wall with a celebratory cup of tea before getting it off the ramps.

Only to notice both the new and old release bearing in the box ..........

Been there, done that on a Pug 205 gti!

I've had far too much practice bench pressing gearboxes into RWD Fords from the 60s/70s (Cortina, 105 Anglia, etc).
Get the front of the car up on ramps, get under the car and rest the 'box on your chest on the way out and again on the way back in.

Now a mate has a workshop with ramps I'll be using his equipment if I need to do any others.

Did a couple of Capri's year ago, one a 5 speed manual the other an auto, I wouldn't do it now!

Did a 4 speed with laycock overdrive on my old VX4/90 in my younger days, now thats a heavy lump laying on your chest!

I took out my 6 speed Transporter box to replace a bearing. Definitely a job for a jack! It was so so heavy that I couldn't lift it up on to the bench! I am old now but I used to do all the Cortinas, Escorts Fiestas and Golfs etc on my own no problem. I've never done anything as heavy as the T5.

As for Steve's Golf, I'd say it has to come out and be checked. It won't settle in. I'd go for a distorted centre plate probably happened when fitting. It can happen if you struggle a bit on your own and the weight tweaks it.

i went to the car earlier in the week to move it into a place i can strip it , hyd clutch pedal was on the floor , i swapped a spare hose over that i had and rebled it , tried it again , id say the judder is half or better , almost at a level where you could believe a bit of use might settle it

so i havent stripped it further , ive ordered a new hyd line and will see how it feels with that

not really sure how /why that exaggerated the judder

Not judder but we had similar on Mrs79’s motocross bike front brake. She had put braided stainless hose on, same bore, braid supposed to restrict expansion so better braking etc etc.

Could not get a decent brake on it.

Gave up. Refitted old KTM ones. Good as new. Still no idea why.

yeah i used to want all that on the cars , then had a braided brake line burst on the mot rolllers , when you think about braided ones look great until the day they fail , at least you can spot a perished rubber one and maybe it will bulge before failing , i wont run em now

been back to the car and the pedal has gone soggy again ...so must want some hyd parts too , nothing appears to be leaking though

Inside the master cylinder dust cover or the slave Or it's an airleak when the pedal returns

Might be restricting flow back from the slave, so releasing the clutch slower than ideal?

My Dodge has a delay valve in the clutch line to do exactly that, to reduce drivetrain shock - I guess from people not used to manual boxes. Valve is now removed from mine!

Didn't some cars have a coiled hard line for tthe clutch hydraulics to reduce judder.

yes this one did from new , struggled to get oem style ones over the years so its had braided , managed to get a oem style one, might be slightly bigger diameter , need to look at that today

braided approx 2.5 i.d original style 3mm or a tad more i.d

The hydraulic pipework whatever it is made of and however it is configured has nothing to do with clutch judder. If it's working properly (ie with no air bubbles) you can think of it as a cable.
