Methanol, IIRC, is really toxic to humans, and (i may be making this up) some other primates, but not so much to many other mamals.

Its not actually the methanol that kills you either, but that its metabolised into stuff that does for you.

I may be talking nonsense, but its my memory that humans are especially bad with it.

I don't know about windshield/windscreen wash solutions on your side of the Atlantic, but the last one that I bought here has methanol in it. The label reads as follows:

DANGER (skull & crossbones) POISON
WARNING: Contains methanol.
May be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed.
Vapor harmful.
Cannot be made non-poisonous.

At least you know what your up against with that. I would look really foolish if the Asda one turns out to be benign. But too many things tie-in. All coincidences?

Thanks . I keep my antifreeze in my oil store with all the other nasties. But screenwash never entered my mind. It's the concentrated version. Maybe it isn't poisonous? But what is it?

I believe that antifreeze has to contain a bittering agent by law, so that this exact thing does not happen. Why cannot that legislation be extended to screenwash?

They’ve been demanding a bittering agent be added to antifreeze for years now, but I’m not sure whether the legislation ever got through or not.

Nope...You can go back to a previous thread about magdrill zero volt switch which is mandatory in EU but not UK and rest of world (that's us). That was given directly to me from trading standards.
I even suspected Wagg dog food using some dodgy meat or the firewood having tanalised pieces in it or shot by farmer (was limping also...red-herring). He had (past tense ) 15acres to run in and he knew his heft.

Dogs are happy to eat and shet where ever they please, sometimes in the same place. Unfortunatly not great for the health. Either make their environment clean and safe, keep a closer watch on them - like you would a child, or accept it as nature.

As you say, owners fault. We can not ban every chemical just because an owner stores incorrectly.


Btw generally screenwash is a water/alcohol mix (not nessasarily ethanol, but generally is). It does not generally contain the poison ethelene glycol which makes up antifreeze, which is a problem due to the sweet taste, hence needjng to be bittered.

Where it says, "Keep out of reach of children", this sentence applies to stupid pets too! Adequate warning in my opinion.

That's a shocking response Kram. Obviously don't like animals for a response like that.

There were instances of it in Devon where it was being deliberately left out to kill.

My biggest issue is my age. Getting another dog is easy when your 30 or so.... on the rebound. But at 73 he was going to see me out. I reckoned on being 81 when he shuffled off (if he was first). So total f'up. Getting pacemaker soon so I'll live forever . But no Benji.

There have been well reported cases of urban cat haters leaving anti- freeze bait out to kill neighbourhood moggies. Difficult to believe that similar products don’t have to be marked as poisonous.
