And what happened for you was tragic, and unfortunately you can’t rewind time, but you have alerted others, i don’t think you’re going to get any closure from this by thinking that a label on a container would have changed the outcome.
Generally people won’t read the contents of a container of screen wash, you’ve just been dealt an unfortunate result from a container which leaked with tragic results for your dog.
My heart as a dog owner and lover goes out to you, especially at your time of life, but you can’t turn back the clock.
There’s another wee mutt out there which needs your love! ……. After some time and reflection……

Piecing together my thoughts.
On the Sunday early evening (dark) he came back in the house through porch looking a little furtive and crashed down next to sofa.
We were both concerned and I rang vets out-of-hours. I thought he might have eaten a toad or something, but vet didn't think so suggested paracetomol because he was limping. Left him overnight and in the morning he seemed much better. Wife went off to daughter's to babysit and I decided to go for firewood with trailer noticed the 'beer' spill on the way out. Checked for a spraying can and none found.
Got to timber yard and open 2nd hatch up on Kuga back, he didn't seem very interested and lay down which was unusual?
Back unhitched trailer and took dog in field. Threw ball once and he picked up and just looked at me, as if to say 'don't want to'. (Previous day was tearing around leaping walls). Crashed out in living room, rang vets who were closing, no open door clinic, and made appointment for 1st thing in morning. Still thought it might be pain from hind leg. Left at vets for morning, after voicing my opinion that poisoning was possible. Went home cleared beer spill up.
Back at vets I was told he had heart failure plus liver and kidney issues (x-rays/bloods). Poisoning? No said vet just bad luck. So £330 lighter, plus heart medicine went home.
Following morning he came in was obviously gasping for breathe sent him out into cooler air, he lay on the grass and wouldn't move. 'Beer' spill was back. No cans were leaking and then the penny dropped. Raced back to vets with him very poorly. They kept him in overnight progressively worsened and then euthanised.
Never actually saw him drink spill and I still need details of non-freezing compound. Being a concentrate it would be potent whatever.

All of our dogs are "rescues" of one form or another, as others have said, often older dogs need a home so a solution if that is a concern. People are right, you have no idea what "issues" they come with but in my experience if you give a dog a loving home they will forever be grateful and issues seem to fade into the background. I feel for you with the loss of your dog, it is very easy to beat yourself up though so don't as you gave the hound the very best when you could.

Thanks for your words...much appreciated, as with the vast majority on the forum. It's been a very emotional experience to have so many offering sympathy.
However, I think at the moment I don't like mysteries. I have an analytical mind from all the years where it earnt my wages. I need to to know for sure if this stuff was the culprit. Can't find data sheet for this exact product ASD706. Plenty similar which are nasty enough. But not exactly. If it wasn't this and we have a resident poisoner in the area, or something nasty on the land somewhere, a new dog isn't a step forward.

Sorry for your loss. There are a lot of dogs in rescue homes now as people can’t afford to keep them, and many of these have no issues save them missing their former loving home. Give one a new loving home and he/she will soon take to it.

Yes on the container there's a UFI code but that just gives a link to another encrypted code for the secret recipe. There's nothing on it that states the components or the toxicity. The ASD706 isn't listed in the data sheet.
Can't believe that is legal? I need to know for sure this is the cause.
If it was thenhe was poisoned on Sunday and died on Thursday.

The MSDS for Asda screenwash indicates that it contains 5-10% ethanol, 1-5% isopropyl alcohol, 0.5% methanol and 0.1% butyl glycol. The balance, around 90%, will be water. There's no mention of ethylene glycol, or propylene glycol, at all. The antifreeze effect will be provided largely by the ethanol.

The poor dog would have had to have imbibed an awful lot of the screenwash to have achieved acutely toxic levels of the alcohols.

Is that the concentrate ASD706 or ready to use? This was ASD706 concentrate. Think 4 to 1 dilution.

Rang the emergency number on container...no answer.
Rang Asda helpline all were for product enquiries none for complaints.
Rang Trading Standards but they are not the real dept just a buffer which is impartial and can only offer legal advice.
Spoke to water tester who's come to routine check out private supply and he'll ask someone if the can find out about product.
If after all this it wasn't screenwash then it's even worse....a mystery unsolved.

My sincere condolences. I think most on here will have lost a dog, and we all know how you feel.

This used to be my day job, so I’ll do my best, bearing in mind that remote diagnosis is never easy. You’ve provided a history above, but some more details would be helpful:

-Benji’s age, breed, sex.

- Any history of illness, treatments, vaccinations.

- Clinical signs/abnormalities identified by the vets, by which I mean:
- temperature, pulse, resp. rate, lymph nodes
- anything from listening to the chest or palpating the abdomen
- discharges, lumps

- Blood/urine results.

^^ this last one would be the most useful. You should be able to get a printout. Since I’m steering along the margins of professional ethics, just say they’re for your own research.

Lastly, it might be worth requesting a chat with the vets involved, emphasising that it’s not for any kind of complaint. They examined him and ran tests - there’s usually a cluster of possible diagnoses (known as ‘differentials’) floating around in mind. Point out that a diagnosis would help with coming to terms with the loss (which it would).

On the bottle, is states to use the screenwash neat for severe driving conditions i.e. to get protection down to -5degC. 10% ethanol in water will depress the freezing point to -4degC. The IPA that's in there will probably depress the freezing point another degree or two, getting to the -5degC.

I've got some Tesco Concentrated Screenwash that's rated to -10degC when used neat. The MSDS gives the ethanol concentration as 10-30%. The link above suggests that slightly over 20% ethanol would give protection to -10degC.

just a thought. wouldn't all supermarket screen wash be made in the same factory, just with different labels. Like so many other products they sell? I wonder if a look at the other supermarket ones may yield a clue or two?

We were donated a Golden Retriever years ago as the owner 's wife had just had a disabled baby and the dog was already a bit of a pain. Friends parting words were " she (the dog) will chew any towel cloth etc" . From day one and for 10 years she caused no damage or problem of any sort. All down to environment and bad handling.

I don't think I'll be rushing out to get a replacement dog, if at all. (I say that now) After 9 years of bonding it can't be replaced in weeks. He was actually bought on rebound because of the loss of our beloved, previous dog who was a saint amongst dogs. The best dog in the whole world IMHO. After his predecessor the dog-from-hell.
Everytime I look at the firewood in hearth it chokes me up. He was so pleased with himself when he fetched it.
As this is a small holding of 15acres it's almost a sin not to have dog here. But if we're forced to sell and move to the town, the thought of traipsing round the streets with poo bags at the ready doesn't appeal.

With World prices of petrochemicals at an all time high, you'd have to wonder if they have been using some chemicals which don't appear on the MSDS and may be more toxic than those that are listed. I think that pure or concentrated ethylene glycol is bad on paint, but much less so when mixed with other chemicals, especially water, and that is a chemical that is very harmful to cats and dogs

Deeply sorry for the loss of your pet.

Asda is part of Walmart...a family that isn't revered in the US apparently?
