No it was built like this! I have the originally plans of the house and it shows two bedrooms and a small shower room.

They look a bit steep as well. or is that just the angle of the photo?

@bourbon you are spot on! In fact I was going to measure the angle as I think the max allowance is 42°

thats without moving your door and your large radiator downstairs

That hall rad is long gone to be replaced with something else in a different place. Not sure what door you're talking about though?

Just so you know the whole lots coming out and the new staircase is going in 180° to this one.
@eLuSiVeMielu the joists run the right way here and they even had another 5" to play with so could have made the stairs much wider to start with

Looks like there is no regulations dictating widths -

"There is no minimum width stipulated for a domestic staircase within part K of the building regulations.

However, it is generally accepted that on a main staircase, going up to the first floor serving multiple rooms should be no less than 800mm, however, we would recommend 850mm to 950mm as this allows more space to get things up the stairs.

For loft conversions, the generally accepted minimum width is 600mm, however between 700mm and 750mm is recommended."

Always remember you may need to get a wardrobe up there! I know your living there, but if it were me Id create the hole/ upstairs floor opening etc, after having had a good play with stair box, to decide what your Mrs wants. Then get the measure man out. Its quite quick. Then fit it. The one I did wasnt so bad as it was a barn conversion with out final floor screed down so still had a bit of wiggle room. Both verticals are weight bearing so building spector wanted to see them, before boarding.

I build steel staircases,usually bespoke or to fit an awkward site,I nearly always make the balustrade joints easily detachable to ease big furniture moving.

Ah ok. There door is already done and the rads gone downstairs so that's ok. The upstairs rad can be moved if needed.

Absolutely not … even in listed buildings …. Grade 1 maybe but you will end up in the middle of a ******* match between conservation and building control

If there's difficulty meeting every rule and reg by the book, have a chat with your BCO. Mine was really helpful.
I had issues squeezing stairs in and keeping headroom on the kites.
If its measured right at the side, technically its not quite enough, measure the centre of the tread and there's loads. He was happy it was practical and was no issue.

Putting the square landing a top saved a fair bit of headroom as you come up. That's just a folded steel tray bolted into the sides, with plasterboard bonded under and caberdeck stuck on top. Done like that to avoid having a lowered section in the downstairs ceiling.


I'd recommend getting a local joiner round to measure up and make. It may be slightly more expensive, but good peace of mind.
The guy that made mine gave me a hand to install too which was handy.

but inside is allowed to be changed this is full width staircase with breaks inbetween as you rise the steps



i can assure you that safety officer wants kicking off the job when your trying to fit and build a staircase and also replace floor to make it safe

but only one job at a time can be done

As Hitch said, narrow stairs sometimes can get you out of trouble when there is no other way.

This is a stair case I put into a very small bungalow when doing a loft conversion, it was the only way to get headroom at the top as that's measured from the centre of the top nosing. A wider flight would have moved the centre over so the height wouldn't comply, as it was it there was only half an inch in it.

This solution was suggested by the building inspector, keep them on your side, they've seen everyone else's attempts, good and bad!

To make it feel less cramped I had the bottom treads made standard width, the whole thing looked in scale with the small room which was still useable, unlike most of the other bungalows on that road with loft conversions.

The floor space lost was no more than a chest of draws, here there's a will there's a way, usually!

@Hitch ,your stairs has an unequal rise,given that landing tread is short on height. Did you have to negotiate that?
