A new staircase.

Well after 5 years of work I'm now ready to fit a new staircase but have little idea what I need to do.
It's not just a replacement but a totally new set of stairs turned 180°. This is what I'm replacing!



It's hard to see the extent of the bodgery here in the photos but yes that really is a dog leg in the left handrail that follows the dog leg in the wall, it's due to a 4" roof strut but 3" studwork wall
It's only 16" or 420mm wide at the top. Elbows in and duck or you'll bash you head on the ceiling! The newals at the bottom are only screwed to the floorboards etc.




We've had to fit a new front door to accommodate the stairs as there wasn't enough room to leave a central door.



I've been looking at the Stairbox website and have done a couple of designs but I don't know if I've missed anything on the measurement front!
Has anyone used Stairbox or similar?
It will have a quarter landing at the bottom 1 tread high.
Any help is very welcome here!

The landing is pretty wide I'll have a measure up.

Extra work to trim floor joists but if definitely consider making that staircase a lot wider if you can.

Is that a loft conversion? If it is it probably contravenes several regulations. I'd guess they squeezed the stairs in between the joints, because they knew no better.

Friend of mine had a loft conversion professionally done, but when the inspector came out the stairs had to be moved, as apparently you're not allowed to build stairs onto a party wall. That made the stairs and the landing pretty narrow, but not as bad as yours.

That's what I thought, this was ten years ago, and apparently a new regulation. Maybe because it was an upstairs wall, bedroom wall? Surely the loft conversion guy would have known.

I'd defiantly make those wider, extra work but worth it in the long run

I don't normally like open treads on stairs but I'd keep those too, to let the light through and make the space look bigger

and to fit that you will loose the space right up to the radiator in the below pic as you need a full square riser area

but you will gain a full landing instead



thats without moving your door and your large radiator downstairs

a long length full size staircase will hit the same point due to the height restriction of the ceiling as you rise up the staircase

It arrived similar to the one in Gaz pictures. And two of us did some head scratching, assembled it and its now in use.

I vaguely recall it was due to the noise of people walking up and down the stairs, maybe.

Builder had to foot the costs of moving things around, but it messed with the whole design, that was already fairly tight for space.

Yep, stair cases, roof trusses and anything uPVC made to order. Let someone else measure, order and fit

I dont know of any building reg saying you cannot run a stair next to a wall

Very strange, unless some scam was being pulled. I recall the whole project was a right pain, but I've not seen the guy for. few years now. No idea why they wanted a loft conversion in a large 3 bed terraced house, as there was only two of them living there.

Looks like there is no regulations dictating widths -

"There is no minimum width stipulated for a domestic staircase within part K of the building regulations.

However, it is generally accepted that on a main staircase, going up to the first floor serving multiple rooms should be no less than 800mm, however, we would recommend 850mm to 950mm as this allows more space to get things up the stairs.

For loft conversions, the generally accepted minimum width is 600mm, however between 700mm and 750mm is recommended."
