the minimum stairwidth reg was removed back in the 80s, the BS mentions the need to get a coffin up and down.

When my Dad was being taken into hospital and the paramedics were trying to get the stretcher down our stairs, one of them said "these stairs probably wouldn't meet building regs now". It's a house from the late 60s, stairs are about 720mm wide but there's a 180-degree bend at stair five and six from the bottom, with a window on that landing (which they eventually pushed him out of). Was the pm correct? I've wondered about extending the garage backwards, but that would mean blocking the window. I could replace it with a Velux (the stairs go up against the sloping roof, it's a "chalet bungalow" apparently) to get the light, but that would be no use for exiting.

Only yesterday I was discussing the staircase at my daughters new (v old) house.
It's an odd place, and being right on the main street of the village (well Town now of course) it's been there lord knows how long, and it's been altered a lot over time.
Property is partly terraced (but not at the front - it looks like it's been built on at the front at some point!) and quite a narrow, long plot.
From the front hallway, the stairway goes in one flight to the 1st floor (there's a wnd stair flight to two loft/2nd floor rooms also).
I'd question the 2nd floor stair arrangement....but the first stair flight is bloody lethal. Steep (very), with narrow treads, and the bottom/first tread feels like a different height to the rest.
A fall on these stairs would result in an "interface" with a very solid hallway wall and a radiator.
Tricky to see quite how you'd change it though.

Lots of older properties like this, my father in law lives in an upstairs flat, built about 1910. Terraced, stairs are lethal, really steep and again small depth of stair. My Mrs reckons stairs will kill him, as hes too pig headed to move!

Daughters terraced house stairs are so steep I tend to go up with my hands on the steps further up rather than standing upright

I like this solution from @gaz1 on page 1.
In my ignorance, I thought you'd have to have a half-landing to turn 180-degrees - which takes up heaps of space.
There's no way my daughters existing staircase could be in one flight with correct tread height and tread depth (currently its 14 steep steps), but if you could turn through 180-degrees like this - it could work!
The wall on the front side of existing is structural - but the wall to the left (as you ascend) /rear to the sitting room - is lath & plaster (ground to 1st), then panelled enclosing the 2nd flight to loft rooms.... so could be removed to give room for the stairs to reverse halfway down, without eating too much space
(I'd not like to try and get a wardrobe up there now or with a 180 mind!)

My mate's workshop had one or two random stairs of a different height a little bit up from the ground floor. It was always entertaining if someone new was carrying a few cups of tea down.

Building regs came in early 80s I think.

Had the 80s in my head after an insurance claim last year. They tried telling the owner it was built in 89 and it wasn't built to regs.

Was actually built in 72. Took me all of 15 minuites to disprove it

@Hitch ,your stairs has an unequal rise,given that landing tread is short on height. Did you have to negotiate that?

Exactly the same rise throughout.

Mine has a temporary first step until the final floor screed is done.

Should be a nice easy one for you.

Does the footprint match the existing opening?

Pretty sure your going to need a building notice on that.

Use the stairbox plans along with info on widening opening.
Eg doubling joists. Coach bolts every 600mm etc

Confirm headroom and banister handrail clearance with them.
