the minimum stairwidth reg was removed back in the 80s, the BS mentions the need to get a coffin up and down.
When my Dad was being taken into hospital and the paramedics were trying to get the stretcher down our stairs, one of them said "these stairs probably wouldn't meet building regs now". It's a house from the late 60s, stairs are about 720mm wide but there's a 180-degree bend at stair five and six from the bottom, with a window on that landing (which they eventually pushed him out of). Was the pm correct? I've wondered about extending the garage backwards, but that would mean blocking the window. I could replace it with a Velux (the stairs go up against the sloping roof, it's a "chalet bungalow" apparently) to get the light, but that would be no use for exiting.
