Yea great but the one you'll need will always be at the back ! stack em the other way round and just reach for the biggest first and save time , you know your going to use the biggest in the end

You can do light taps with big hammer but cant do hard knocking with a small hammer

About 3 years ago I helped a lady pull a decent hardwood stable door from a skip. She put it into storage until she could find somebody to resize it and make it fit.

I’m stopping at hers this week and catching up as I’ve not seen her since we got the door. Today’s job “to stop me getting bored” - shave an inch off the sides of the door, add a filler for height, paint it, remove old right-handed door, hang left-handed stable doors.

Then celebrate with a generous freehamd shot of laphroaig

I got this the other day. I thought it was spilt on the shaft.
Turns out it was a growth ring that was concaved.

This is not a wedge.
This was a brass split pin.

It didn't take long to remove the head.

Beech round wedge.Fresh paint. Sanded handle and a new edge.

Dressed edge, polished handle and a few coats of wax.

No power toold were used.

This brace oif old tools came my way the other day.

The Parallels have a government stamp, in the shape of an Arrow. But not other details. Suggestting they were part of an order, but never issued.


So using some dry ice I chilled the bras rivets and popped them out. Then the Ebony wood was cleaned and polished using some home made clear french polish.

Then chilling the rivets I assembled it again.

The Veneer Marking gauge was stiff to use. Getting it to the component parts was tricky. As being box wood they can split.

Inspection showed that in the Mortice slot was a laqrge build up of dirt. Making a slim sharp cuting tool had it removed.
Then it was a case of cleaning and hard wax.

I guess that like most things, homebrewed wine has fallen out of favour with the influx of supermarket plonk. I've still got a Shed full of random wines I made when I was into the homebrew. I must crack a few and see how they've matured.

Bit more from Yesterday sesson.

This has been waiting to be restored to use for a while now.
The issues were the heads had dried out and some one had slapped on a thick coat of varnish. It was so thick the flakes could draw blood.

I contacted Thor and asked about new heads. They were kind enough to send out a small pot of restoring glop. You steep the heads for 72 hours.
Does it work?
Time will tell.
The shaft was french polish.


This set of WW2 wire cutters came my way and were in need of some work.
All the joints are seized and it was coated in a clear coat of unknown type.

This does not show how much work went into getting the cutters to this stage.

Each riveted joint had to be warmed and oil worked in.

When they were free and the spring action restored I used a gun Black Kit to restore the original finish.

This Bike Light was a pain to save. It looked good at first view.

Getting it fully opend and dismantled showed how thin the metal was. Even from new.

The wick gears were bent, from using the wrong wick.

The top had to be reinforced with some thin plate. The metal was so thin, it could not hold it's own weight.
But removing the rust did allow the side window to be free and open. This is the correct way to light the wick.

De-rusted, correct wick, running on lamp oil and giving a good steady light.

This trio of small items cam my way for a few pounds.

All three needed some attention

The brass anvil top was scared and rounded off.
Here you see it after I stoped by a friend who had a mill. He skimmed the top for me.

Cleaned and polished. Then any burs and dents removed.
Then mounted on some odd hard wood.

I still wounder how any one can bend the threaded part of a vice.

Repainted and mounted on some wood. It is a shame a nice little vice has had so much abuse.

In bits. I haven't looked into the details of this vice yet.
It is a good solid designe and is well made.

How to fix something without thinking it through, or how being lazy leads to more convoluted solutions.

This carburetor off a brush cutter has broken off this L shaped bit that holds the screw that adjusts the idle. I guess the ocrrect repair would be a new carb, but I got a mill and lathe and I think I bought them for a reason... and that reason was not to take up space in my garage.

So I turn and mill this part:

Which will fit into the hole I drilled on the carb here, I determined there was enough meat for a small hole, threading might be a bad idea though so I went with epoxy to hold everything together. I got devcon from when I rebuilt the mill and figured it would do.

Test fitting

It works, so proceed to drill and tap

OK the part is threaded and cut off from the stock and devcon epoxy applied, I think it will hold.

This is where the don't think ahead part comes in. There's no room to fit the air filter now. There's a reason the original was an L-shaped bracket so the screw was oriented 90 degrees around and instead had a tapered point for setting the idle. But I thought that was too much work to mill and then do turning on an excentric part... But now it bites me in the ass. Always gotta look twice with all the parts in place before going ahead.

So what's my recourse? I'll make a spacer between the carb and filter:

And it fits, in fact I could reduce the thickness quite a lot yet, no need for a spacer wider than is needed:

I made a shorter, homemade screw yes.

The bitch won’t stop chewing things,so she’s been evicted at nightime,the floor had rotted since the last owner moved out,so this pallet received a floor and the kennel received a lift,good for my back aswell.
