That's what I'd just started to figure out, every time I tried going for a longer arc and less travel was when I had problems. The other big realisation was you need to work uphill, try going downhill and the flux rolls forward into the arc.

I’ll pop some in post mateA handful of 2.5mm would do me, 3.2 are probably a bit too chunky. I think the 253ma rods would be wasted on this but I'll let you know if I ever get a micro gas turbine in for repair.

Today was another brew day. Time for more Citra IPA, the last lot was very popular. I gave the brewery a quick wash down as its been a couple of months since last use.
Then weighed out the malt
Or rather my able assistant did
Then turned on the orgasmatron
And did a bit of sparging
And then some boiling with lots of hops
Then more hops in the hop rocket
Then into the the fermentation vessel with it.
Turned out about 1.045 so probably ferment out to about 4.5%
It was a beautiful day so had a couple of home brews in the sun.

I'm glad I got to try them or I'd almost certainly have bought a pack of 1.6mm rods, then probably put any problems with them down to it being stainless, and sworn off it for life.

One skinny spacer:
To fill this gap, it'll all get welded together to make a passthrough.
Assembled it'll look something like this:
With the elbow inside the kettle. The idea is I can slacken the SMS nut a little and rotate the pipe to let me skim the wort off the top of the trub. I think this is how proper breweries do it, homebrewers usually use a screen/mesh. I'm not sure if that's because this is harder to make or because it doesn't work at this scale. Looking at it now I'm thinking it might be better to use a bit of bent 8mm copper instead of the elbow, that way it's easy to take off for cleaning, slower flow through a small pipe might prevent the flow from kicking up sediment too.

Supranox rods ran a treat, it might just be that I'm getting better at sticking though. Cheers Dale.
I assembled that passthrough backwards, it protrudes further forward than I wanted while barely making it through the keg, should be fine though. I've also warped the funk out of that triclamp flange, luckily not so far that the gasket can't seal it, but it's a massive pain to get the clamp on.
Bit of tidying up still to do, the back side of the welds are all oxidised and nasty. Do people backpurge with MMA?

If it's an open joint you do not need to purge but if it's not you need to either use a backing tape, purge or use solar fluxNo leaks!
