Help offered cheap lathe but....

Paint it! strip as far as you need to do the repairs, derust, degrease and repaint the bare metal with a couple of coats of red oxide, don't overlap it onto the grey, then give it all a coat of grey machine enamel using a gloss roller, and a brush for the fiddly bits, it will look amazing! That is a very nice machine!!

I altered my thinking with regards to restoring or tarting things up, when I moved here. It's better to have something you can use, than a project which may never be finished.

Yeah makes sense its never going to be a minter as had a hard life , if I decide to keep it long term then may do as hermetic says and paint when I have less projects on the go

Best way, I'd say. Life has a bad habit of interfering with project time, so just a good clean up, sort any bits which may need attention etc., ticks my boxes these days. Owt beyond that is a bonus, not necessity.

That lathe will serve you well, it’s chunky and well made, and most of all it was cheap as chips, so you won’t spend all your time polishing and admiring it. Get a vsd on it quick..

@Pete. I have the motor off now, it has a 28mm shaft on a 180mm flange with 21.5cm PCD total outside dia 250mm I believe it is call a L100 flange type B5. If you get time to see if you have motor like that id really appreciate Pete

Forgot that 100 frame has a larger shaft... So needs to be a 100L frame unless you can get a 24mm shaft to fit in the 28mm hole!

The only single phase input vfd's you'll find for 3kw are Chinese ones though and they will be Chinese kilowatt not good old British spec ones

I will check the shaft diameter of my motor when I get home it's definitely an iron cased motor but I don't know if its 90 or 100 frame if I had to guess I would say 90L

Thanks Pete, Im gonna try to stick to 2.2kw if I can should be able to get a decent one here as you say im a bit dubious about the ratings they give the chinese ones for the size they physically are

There is the option to get a 240v to 400v 3phase inverter but they are stupid money I cant justify it

Ok It's a 90L WEG motor so 24mm shaft and a smaller flange than the 100L. It's here if you can use it though.

@Pete. the shaft drives an adapter which has the brake surface on the outside and has six rubber bushed spigots that then drive the gear box so would be a pain to convert i think but thanks for looking if I get stuck I will let you know

Decided i'd tackle the apron last as a strip down was needed due to gunk in the bottom and some rust. Its the only thing ive found that seems a bit dopey in design as its a total loss oil system with a little reservoir that you top up at the start of each day and im sure thats always been done theres a little tank that fills up and a setting on the control lever that flicks oil about



lots of gunk and chips inside but all the gears look ok , the star wheel is part of the adjustable automatic knock off that stops the carriage when it hits the bed stops.

I have 2 issues though that I could do with a bit of advice on



This is the gear on the end of the hand wheel and some idiot has put half a taper pin in it and its not easy to see but its rotated traping the pin so it wont budge.

Any thoughts on removal ? i need to get it off idealy to get the handwheel asembly / clutch off



this is the gear/shaft that engages with the rack on the bed of the lathe and its really worn would this be expensive to get made ?

any help appreciated so far these are the only big issues i have found
