Positive placement nailer

I had a play with a Plaslode nailer for the first time the other day. Had no idea what I was doing... anyway racked the safety back and pulled the trigger, and shot a nail into the breezeblock from 10 metres... I had NO IDEA how powerful those things are

Its a gas explosion in a chamber, blooming powerful.
Most air nailers pack a bigger punch

You dont actually need the timber in the concave side of the steel. Just cut the steel, to sit inside, and separate with noggins, a steel tab ever 800 or so, through bolted. Once the floor is glue and fixed it will stabslise it all. You could have save all the drilling for support on the other side, by using two PFC back to back.

Im assuming youve had load calculations done for the weight over the proposed span.

not quite sure what you mean here Yes I think we could have notched the timbers at the concave end and bolted the hangers straight up, TBH, I kinda wish we'd started doing that. But here we are.

Yes I had load calcs done, I was quite certain I wanted no column in the middle and also quite a good loading for the entire thing (plenty heavy storage space). Hence the two large beams spanning the lot. We still have some diagonals to put in, but were waiting til the flooring is down to make life easier

This is a PFC supporting a floor, there are tabs ever 800 to bolt in a floor joist, once the floor is fixed down, and some noggings are in, it becomes a diaphram stiffening the whole structure. In your case youve used could have used an I girder so each side could have been the same, or two PFC back to back, saving a lot of drilling and joist hangers, and the timber ledger installed in the joist.

Just pointing out a cheaper / quicker method for your next bigger workshop.

Absolutely part of the problem here is that I've considered each stage seperately, instead of as a whole, making it progressively more difficult.

i.e. we installed the main front load frame. Then we drilled and installed the PFC. Then we drilled and installed the hangers...

If I'd designed the whole thing as a one-er to start with, we wouldn't have ended up doing so much mag drilling in the air

Thankfully once the last of the hangers are in, we're on the downwards stretch and nearly home.

Saturday's work:

Joists all finished and nailed
First bay noggins fitted
First bay flooring sheets down

Feels incredibly rigid under foot which is exactly what I was going for.

Should be able to get the rest of the noggins fitted in evenings this week, and sheeting the floor next Saturday shouldn't take all that long really.

Yeah, those things ought to require a firearms licence. I discovered this when fitting new roof joists a few years back. Nearly soiled myself on the first pull of the trigger.

Yes excellent job, did you know that you can get flooring ply with a machine groove similar to Egger wayrok type flooring, if you want to increase your floor structure ridgidty or in a house reduce creaking, glue the boards to the joists.

So what do you propose to be building in this here big shed?

I actually didn't know I wouldn't have bothered in this case anyway though.

Well... both myself and my brother have plenty of projects, and farm machinery etc to fix/modify/make as well as the odd contract job. One large space, with all of our tools, and a place for changing/washing etc (there will be a wash basin in the far corner) will do us really nicely.
My own workshop was/is great, but only really room for one decent size bit of kit at a time to work on.

I'm really looking forward to getting the electrics and lights finished and getting all my gear in here instead

I'll probably do it... Like I say, I have a part time business and pick up the odd fabrication job - generally stainless steel work, since stainless TIG welding is right up my street. Our workshop is geared up well enough for structural steelwork...now I've finally got a proper home for steelracks and bandsaw. Some heavy duty roller racks are next on the cards, now they can be fixed.

Of course, it depends as to what standard you need things made to.

I'm at that sort of level now where I've been umming and ahhing about taking the plunge and getting some weld procedures and qualification to ISO standards, but it's a bit chicken and egg... Need the work to justify the qual costs, but need the quals to get the work... and again, still just part time and doing it for the sheer enjoyment.

A building will need to be CE approved for me, with clacs to class 2, though the more I look into it, the less it seems to mean. A man not too far from you gave me a decent price, I go back to when I get the planning piece sorted.

IT'S ALMOST DONE!

Flooring laid, lighting underneath complete - 18w LED strip lights. Not sure if they'll be enough yet, but they aren't bad.

Obviously the first thing to do was to bring the chairs upstairs.

Started handrailing last night, so once the handrails are fabricated we can start laying out storage and tables etc.

Started making handrail standards for the stairs last night... bodged cut the elongated areas with plasma... thankfully will be welded up so won't see my shaky hand

It's been a long time since I've had to make handrail returns... I was amazed when the first one turned out right!

Got the rails all finished on Saturday

M16 nuts welded into the ends, a couple of bends, some TIG butt weld joins and finished welding the rails into the angle uprights with MIG.

It'll all come off again for painting, though.

It also highlights how low the top U-beam is for head clearance It's not a problem as such, just a bit of a fly in the ointment. We might alter it at some point.
