07 should be the m9r engine in which case you may get lucky in getting the engine hot hot. The oil filter housing expands slightly and then can release.

If not the hammer and screwdriver to pierce a hole. Snap the rest of the cap off then lever the threaded part off and replace the cap.

shame I already drained the oil !, but sounds a good idea, if I use a hot air gun on it to get top hot, will have to be carefull though its soaked in oil as steering pump had gone, replaced that ok, just thought oil and filter wont take ten minutes while ime here,ha . after that its sort the abs light on, presume,well hope its a wheel sender. Might not work in this case but in the past I have tightened a jubilee clip or two around a filter and used the worm screw lug to get something to grip on it without squeezing and crushing the filter.

Try the metal strap type of wrench less chance of crushing the housing.

You need to a hex socket on them, if you try with a normal 12 point you will chew it up. If you have the right socket it's scary how much load you have to put on them sometimes.

If it's the O ring binding then sometimes you need to hold them under tension and they will start to move.

I have several different types of filter wrenches including a couple of sets of the cup types. I have specific set of low profile sockets for the plastic housings.

I have one of these and I have found it will grip normal spin on filters that other won't.They work well because they don't focus the leverage in single spot as much as other designs so they tend not to deform the cannister as much. For me the normal issue is doing a vehicle I've not touch before and someone else has goosed it up.

Personally I would just put the new oil in and get the vehicle running, often these paper cartridge types with socket tops are in a position where you can change them without draining the oil so you could just do it another day.

I am using a six sided snap on socket, its stupid tight, like i said you can see the body of the cap starting to twist yet the top threaded part is stationary, if I put more weight the upper part or something is gonna break for sure, or the lower part with moulded nut will shear off.
at least its not something I put on for a change as first person to admit doing stuff fred king tight.

as ever, whats iirc ? replacement part less than a tenner? replacing it isnt the problem, getting the damn thing off is. !

I reckon it hasnt had a filter change for 70k minimum, so would prefer to get it changed rather than let the engine get wrecked, I asked the owner when was last oil and filter changed, he has owned it about 7 years and done 70 plus k in it...ugh dont know about that, but alternator was replaced as it broke down, at present its got 175k on it so reckon it deserves /earned a new filter.
Although as it hasnt been done new oil and filter might just turn it into a smoking clattering wreck !!

I bought that style of wrench from Lidl a few years ago, pretty good and I use it every year on my wife's car, there just isn't room to get an end cap removal tool in there,....those cap types are my preferred/go to, assuming that the correct size is in the case.

did see that you are goiing to try heat gun but think this would have a higher chance of melting some thing before getting heat in to where you need it think of it as your cooking meat low and slow gets the heat all over and heats up all of the inside as well unless your just going for a rare steak

im not a mechanic so im just thinking aloud

So are you saying the main body of the oil filter to which the cap screws is also plastic?

On my Audi the body is aluminium with a plastic cap..but that plastic is a 35% glass fill and incredibly strong.

Can you remove the whole filter body to ease disassembly?

I will have to have another look as its all covered in oil and carp where the power steering pump above it leaked for years,then failed, but I think its all plastic.
had all the front of to replace power steering pump, but couldnt remove bumper due to the stupid clips rotating...anyways didnt realise I would have this palaver just to remove filter so re assembled front of van(Duh) , then got under to remove oil filter, normally as we all know a two minute job...Ha so yes it might be remove all the front,get the bumper of somehow,remove complete assembly ,then get it apart ,but by taking it of the van you will no longer have it secure enough to get the leverage needed to unscrew the ..... thing, but with bumper off it would be very much more getattable....... I'd get replacement lid and carefully break offending part off. Always run risk of damaging the other less easy to replace bits by going tonto on it's aris

So enough wasted time being sensible, took yours and others advice, carefully smashed the bottom off, extracted old filter, then persuaded the remaining piece thats threaded inside the ali casing it attatches to(after a wipe down I found it to be ali) with a screw driver cracked it, as soon as I did that it came out easy...

Thanks foe the advice,must admit goes totally against the grain breaking it, like I was an rush a.. teenager again,ha. but the main thin is it worked. cheers one and all. Arther
