Is the green component in your sketch a spacer or is that the grey part?
Is you tool head positively indexed ?
If it is I can see getting the head to unlock being more of a problem than knowing where it is.
I would prefer radially arranged sensors as it would make it possible to remove the sensor pack without dismantling the entire drive and I would prefer to not put them adjacent to eachother to prevent crosstalk.
The drawing below shows what is what. The disc will likely attach to the second red arrowed part which only rotates, the part it is attached to at the moment both rotates and moves axially. I just drew it on that part to make sure I was going to have enough clearance for the switches to fit in.
If I could find a cheap supply of prox's similar to the ones I have (pictured below) but in 4mm dia thread then that would have been the way I went, the smallest I have found so far however is 8mm. I only have approx 34mm inside the grey housing so the 8mm prox switches would not fit side by side as they would need a 10mm spacing between them. I could go down to 3 as @daleyd mentioned but I would prefer to keep the 4.
