Well, it has taken a few days, but the 2 bill hooks have been "restored". Not to show room condition, but to a working one.
One will go to my friend and one I will keep.
Both were striped down.
The blades were cleaned, warmed to a dull red and dipped into old engine oil, this was repeated 3 times. The tangs were heated to a red colour and allowed to cool slowly to soften it. The cutting edges were cleaned and then heated to a "Purple" temper and dressed with a "Scythe" stone to put a sharp edge on them both.
Both handles and ferrules were in good condition, they just needed a lean up back to bare wood and soaked in a wax based stain. Camp coffee and bee's wax.
Then refitted with a copper Rove rivet on the end of the tang.

RN Chipping Hammer.
From this. Head was loose, only the remains of a glue repair holding it in place. The ends were completely ruined and the metal was soft.
Striped down. Handle cleaned and was found the head was fitted upside down. So it was refitted and wedged back in place. Even the wedge had a "Broad Arrow" stamped on to it.
Head cleaned, ends reshaped after Hardening and tempering the ends. I did save most of the stampings, so the history has been preserved.
Shaft refitted and waxed with a dark oak wax stain. Now it is sat gathering dust.

Best of luck with it, one of the Land Rover mags decided to buy and run one to dispel the myths about how troublesome they were, after doing articles on replacing the gearbox and complete front hubs there was no mention of it again

I did like @winchman 's post but realistically @Robotstar5 is I fear nearer to the mark. I you did not pay a lot for it why not, hope you have a bit of fun and it gets you through at least one winter, you just need to know when to part company. As it happens I am toying with a remarkably cheep E320 from MB's darkest days but I figure if it is so cheep there in not a lot to lose.

I bought it from a good friend who looked for ages to find a nice one, lady had had it for 5 years and it wanted for nothing, he bought it on springs with the intention of putting it back on air suspension, need less to say he spent a good few hundred quid trying to get the air to work correctly and then put it back on springs!
It runs well came with 12 months MOT from a garage I trust all for £1000! On classic insurance for £200.
Lets see how it goes at least I shouldn't have to weld it?
