Hi
Ive now managed to jack the car up onto some spare VW alloys i have kicking about from a 99 beetle i scrapped and the rostyles the Mg rolled in on (safer than axel stands and higher lift ) ... My bro/I have a decent low entry high lift jack so with a few 8 x 4 timber offcuts it flew up ... well half of it did (passenger side ) ..... the other half grumbled , groaned and decided it would just about go up well under the x-member without it failing ! ( drivers side ) .
This car seems to be a story of 3 of 10 owners in its history judging by the repairs ......
owner 1 bought it and loved it
owner 2/3 spent money to turn it into a chrome bumper
owner 2 had some quailty repairs done at some point (passenger side )
owner 3 bodged it beyond belief ...... ive got last owner 3 floor pans placed directly over owner 2's floor pans that obv needed fixing , held in with bolts and underseal . never knew that was an acceptable fix lol .
Started to cut into the drivers floor (well after the guy before me hacked the seams off the centre X-member but it needs changing anyway ) , infact unless im mistaken its half X member , jack point , all 4 parts of the sill / box on the drivers side .
So ......... I've decided to change tact as i need to save up a bit for the parts for the drivers side , i'm going to start with its nose and work round to the drivers side . Plenty to keep me going .

Slow and steady is always best and saving for decent parts is always a bonus, With projects like this the good thing is there is always plenty to do that is just graft and thats free...lol, This will make a cracking car when finished.

Nothing worse than coming across a heap of botches from someone else....worst of all is the time it takes to remove all the mess before you can actually get down to fixing stuff and rebuilding properly.
You're lucky that all the panels are readily available....how are prices....reasonable or worth considering making stuff yourself?
My new secure support system is a couple of rsj offcuts...they are very stable and secure. I really dislike any wobble in the car when I'm working on/under it....alot of axle stands I think have too much slop when extended.

prices arent really too bad .... tho not 'cheap'
40 ish for the half X member
better part of 300 for the castle rail /inner/outer/floor box
50 ish for rear wing repair section
8 quid jack mount
no rush to do it , its going nowhere lol

Looks like you'll need the spring mount and floor reinforcement as well.

Looking forward to this build....I always wanted to build an MG. Bet it's near impossible finding one which hasn't seen some botching at some stage in it's like!
Whats the steel thickness like...bet it's not tin foil like my nissan.

The entire drivers side has gone so wants replacing one way or the other of that there is no option .
The steel thickness is ok where it isn’t rusted lol , 0.9/1mm mostly (as someone said before )
Next items out of the local factors .... spray tin of 2k epoxy primer .. tin of weld thru / etch primer ... tub of filler and wet/dry ... and a brimful of elbow grease lol
Also for 320 quid plus a few panels (not all as stated ) ... I wasn’t expecting a minter , as its about as best hoped for lol

Changed my mind as to where to start ....
Decided as I have 2 x side boot /trunk repair panels that came with the car to start there ... so will start at the back and work round clockwise ... pics of right hand side to show how the left hand side was before I attacked it with screwdriver and chisel to investigate ...

You can notice In pic one of my last post the lack of weld to the wing .... no wonder it’s all rotted through , it was held with seam sealer and a prayer ... waters got in and rotted out inside Out .
Edited to add ... if you also look at pic 1 of my last post closely .... under the rotted out hole .... can you see how someone thought it was a good idea to overlap panels ... not weld them together ... and Seam / underseal the life out of them !

Brings back memories of being a mk1Capri owner. Nothing like taking a flat piece of steel,making a repair panel and the satisfaction of finishing welding it in and then you sit back with a cup of tea

I’ve got 2 copies of one of the restoration manuals - might be a Haynes. They’re really good. Would certainly be willing to long term lend you one if it’d be useful. I’ll dig it out after Xmas.

Work on the MG continues ....
Decided to start at the back and go round the passenger side while I save up for the drivers .... put a 160 grit disc in the grinder and attacked anything looking surface rusty on the body and ended up with this ... CAD template beginning to be formed for repair .

What’s the best way to deal with the worst of the pitted areas before I slap filler over it .. corarser disc and back to shiny metal or rust remedy
, all shiny metal has had some zinc primer stuck on it while I decide what’s best as protection Malc
Either cut it out, or blast it. Never had any luck otherwise, it just comes back through. Small areas a spot blaster works, large areas you need a pot, big compressor and a willingness to cover every remotely flat surface within 25yds in used media (I used crushed glass).
