another quandary. I had originally thought the window was portrait until I noticed the size of the cull. So now the gap is wider than expected and 2 beams now go right over the window. What sort of lintel would suffice and how would I fix it. I have one more course of blocks to lay on top and I had planned for a 4 x 4 beam to go across but not sure if this is strong enough.

4x4? Hope you don't mean wood. Any old lintel will be fine, one or two courses of bricks is nothing.

You should have built it like a bungalow and put the roof up first , then bunged the walls up low.
Who me?hope your sitting that window onto a sill..not iff but when water gets into the frame moulding its designed to run through weep holes into the sill then exit away from the building

I don't know the technical name of it, but I would call it an expanded mesh external corner for rendering to. You cut it to length and using short masonry nails or any short nails you have, nail it onto an external wall corner and then cement render to it. The metal on the corner is then used as a guide to render to and remains seen.
