Ok chaps not far away now. sadly being slowed down by an injury to an intercostal muscle but rain now looks imminent for the rest of the week after Tuesday so I might be forced to rest it!

Anyway. Who are these spot mix boys I cant see anyone listed locally to kidderminster.

Second I was hoping to use Kingspan(TYPE) insulated corrugated sheet for the roof, but as I have not recovered all the money out-laid for the bolts and my sons signs for his house before the end of AUgust, money is now very tight. Second hand roof panels seem not existentView attachment 69585 so I am looking at felt for the time being. I had some really thick DEBOTEC on the old shed and have been looking to see how much that is but I cant see it other than supply and fit only.

Looking for suggestions if any one has any please??

Sorry spotmix is a local to me company but any on site mixing is the same,only pay for what goes in the hole and they have lads to barrow it for you.DONT use Debotec iff you can help it as its crap and does not have the full SBS modified bitumen on it.Try and find a Rose roofing suppler and get the Rose Modi torch on either the modi 4mm plain (sand finnished) or the Modi mineral surfaced 4mm torch on...Its far better stuff to work with and sticks like s$$t to a blanket. Burn the plywood (18mm) 1st till its brown all over as this gets rid of the factory resins on top and acts as a primer.It should be a 2 layer system really but iff moneys tight then you could always overlay again in the future with another layer . Iff you need any advise then just PM me mate.

glad to see it's coming along. Here's my two penneth:
I'd try and get the roof right first time as doing twice may be a false economy! Get some prices on seperate sheets of insulation and roof sheets as this may be cheaper. Its certainly cheaper buying insulation and plasterboard separately rather than the all in one boards.
I also think this would be the cheapest option, and is also relatively quick and easy.
if you do go down the felt route I would advise using a single ply rubber covering rather than torch on felt. Torching felt on takes a bit of practice to get right and look good, and you need a torch from somewhere! Using single ply rubber is quicker, looks better, lasts longer and costs the same or less than torch on and really is a piece of pi$$ to do, no special tools or techniques required. Anyone that has had experience with both will tell you the same, unless its an old boy stuck in his ways!
I use firestone rubber from a company called rubbaseal. Their website has some "how to" instruction videos that are very good and I've found them cheaper than roofers merchant.

I don't want to come across as opinionated or a know it all, as the saying goes there's more than one way to skin a cat! I've had experiences with lots of different products and techniques within the building trade, good and bad I'm just offering my humble opinion and hopefully I can pass on some helpful advice!

Here's one I did earlier. Shamelessly nicked from an old thread of mine. Felt was by far the cheapest option and this has now lasted ten years. Still looks new.

incidentally, most of the ply sheets were "found" by asking local builders if I could take some of their hoarding. I then had to buy a few sheets of OSB to complete.

All the sheets were laid with silicon edging and half a dozen 2 inch screws.

Spent a LOT of time detailing the edges, remember, this was never designed as a flat roof so I had to pack out a lot of edges and corners as well as removing and refitting every panel. But managed to fit the underlay despite the wind which blew the fist sheet, roll and all, right off the roof!

Tada.

...and finally. Is it me or does it now look more like a railway station outbuilding?

You can see how I'm priming the surface. Just the join and the two edges, the rest gets a quick wipe.

Now where did I put my glasses?

Ah, there they are.

Almost there but the rains cometh. Maybe just a shower.

So I put a sheet down and came in for a cuppa.

I think I'll put a half sheet (from the other end) on next so the join is on the flat where it needs be.

Well the idea being, there isn't a single perforation in the entire covering. That roof has been as dry as an Egyptian tomb since, well since king Tut were a lad....

I spent weeks looking for basically the cheapest I could find. Off eBay iirc. Every so often someone would have a special offer or dump a job lot etc. It does take some commitment to make sure you're in the right place at the right time. If I was doing it again, I'd find the self adhesive felt then look up the recommended underlay for that product. I don't think it's really that important exactly which underlay you use though.

As an aside, that was once an apex roof and the council made me take it off! I had to lift the entire roof on one side to make a fall and fit some extra joists inside to level the ceiling, hence the odd shape.

seeing as we have gone all roofy on this thread...todays job,arrive at 7.15am and strip exsisting roof off (14 8x4,s)...fix new 18mm plywood,lay... 1 layer of ventilating layer...1 layer of 3mm base layer...and finnish off with a high performance cap sheet (4mm). All rubbish removed and getting in the trucks for 2.45pm on way home.30 year plus roof and customers very happy. Do it all again tomorrow just like the last 35 plus years.Couple of pics for all you roofers out there

the ybs looks like breathable under felt to me used on traditional pitched roofs with slates or tiles. I've not seen it used as a base layer for a felted flat roof before. I would assume it can only be used with self adhesive felt or cold applied felt as flames would melt it? Also don't know what purpose using breathable felt serves if you stick a none breathable coating directly over it? Unless its just using up what you have lying about! You usually have an air gap between the breathable membrane and the roof covering for it to do its job.

self adhesive flat roofing was to fill the market where naked flame was not feasable...gimmick imho and is better suited to its primary role these days and thats vertical tanking (cellars,underground buildings ect) rather than long term roofing options.

just keep it back 12mm with the sill recessed to match...then you can put a nice bead of silicone up the frame/wall

Aerated are an absolute pain when it comes to fixing things like shelves

Use chemical anchors like Hilti stuff they spread the loading immensely through the blockwork be they soft light one or lunking big 90 kg compressed concrete ones unlike expanding rawl bolts or wall plugs and are a doddle to insert . Instead of buying their anchor bolts buy some stainless studding and abraid a few threads that go in the hole with an hand grinder
They are ideal to set the window frames in with as well as the door jambs & any heavy shelving
