I have had several reminders / warnings from eBay regarding "bladed items" listed on my account. Here is the most recent email:

None of this appeared to apply to me until I finally figured out I had a set of woodworking chisels for sale. The listing had one bidder and I didn't expect it to sell for much anyway, so I cancelled the auction rather than end up using some age-verification delivery service at my expense. They may get binned unless I can find a way to sell them online without a lot of hassle.

Looking online, I'm not totally convinced that chisels are a "bladed product" but hey-ho this is a one-off sale and I'm not going to waste a lot of time.

Me too. I sold a wood-turning chisel some months ago, and that's it.

Royal mail does tracked 24/48 with age verification and it's only £6.3 so easy.

I presume they mean they report you to HMRC is that correct?

I assume so but only if I don't give them my national insurance number.

Sell more than30 items or sales of over £1740 in a year and the marketplace needs to report you to hmrc.

NI number is needed for identification.
I presume that is to stop you selling 29 items on ebay and another 29 on ebid and so on..

Wont affect you with what you are selling, it's designed to catch people who are making or buying stuff to sell and not paying the necessary tax on those sales.

Well I can honestly say all my items are my own as said from childhood and stuff I brought 10 years ago and longer.

Taxed at birth and death.

It will be some random time after you reach one of the limits.
If you don't give them the ni number you'll have another random amount of time (seems to be 21-30 days) before they 'suspend*' your listings.

*they don't ban you. Or actually remove your listings. They just hide the listings from buyers** until you provide the ni number.

** this also seems to be random, a mate of mine got suspended weeks ago and has still made a couple of sales since then.
If I search his listings nothing comes up. I think the sales may be from items people had 'added to basket' before he was suspended?

I'd be a bit wary of doing that.
If the inland revenue come knocking at the door it would be easy to prove you are just clearing out tat.
Your 14yr old son might have a hard time proving that 30yr old tat was stuff he had bought himself years ago!

Never heard of getting things from jumble sale,. charity shops or just being given them as freebies

If he's selling off his old tat doesn't matter if he sells 300 items for 200k.
It's his tat, he's not doing it for a business.
Hmrc won't have any problem with him.

If it's all 'his' stuff but he's sold it through his sons, wife's, and dog's ebay account they might ask questions.

It's only for sellers using private accounts rather than business accounts I think.
If that applies to you they'll ask you at some stage
