Going back the mention of Dutton - while they seemed to use YTS welders with their eyes shut, they aren't quite as bad as you might think - been abusing mine in off-road trials for over 10 years - one chassis crack in that time. tTwo bust diffs, three engines, one prop, numerous tyres:

well I have to concede then my, opinion of the dutton chassis is based on shot blasting a couple and repainting them,
they never looked very strong to me
but I have to change my mind if you have been offroading one for years, you must have twisted and tested it to death so your in a much better position to judge than me, my view was based on looks yours is real world and probably far more accurate

anyway I have looked through the pictures in the link, its all very interesting
l could see me doing that and the wife did say I should get out more lol
do they do this in the midlands ?
what are the classes ?
got any links to more info ?

there's an awful lot of kit cars in the pics is that because they are light ?
would a jago jeep be any good, is it to tall and hence prone to falling over ? I ask because there is one living in the hedgerow behind the barn

as always in life its about the the preparation rather than the final act, the the 6 P's springs to mind lol
have something shotblasted gives an excellent surface for paint to cling to

If the Geep is complete then worth having just for engine, box and rear axle as based on Escort. Chassis, on the other hand might not be suitable for building a body along the sandrail lines you desire as short & high.

yep jeep is complete with crossflow engine, its been in the barn once and jet washed and got running but then I needed the space back so it got shoved round the back, was nearly completely overgrown with brambles at the end of last year, its far to good to break up I will get round to restoring it at some point, just don't know when as the project list seems to get longer not shorter as I just acquired an eagle rv to restore

the eagle rv I have acquired to restore, I was keen to get my hands on it as I have a brand new unsed body shell that I bought years ago
I thought I would remove this body that has obviously used as a test bed for a hole saw manufacturing company
then shot blast the chassis paint and reassemble using my new bodyshell creating a nice new eagle rv
ha if things would run to plan lol
on stripping the body of the chassis it became clear it need new crossmembers, who ever thought 1 1/2" 16g erw tube would be strong enough on a kit car

not to deterred I thought I would just flick out the crossmembers and replace with new how silly of me

when I tipped the chassis over the main chassis rails had suffered just as bad

looking at it positively the chassis just consists of 80x40mm box section all straight pieces so should be able to make a complete brand new chassis in a day I would think

so I bought an eagle rv to restore, but not going to use the chassis or the body or the engine and box in fact not going to use a single piece off it

I built a Pheaton when I was 16 (‘81). If I knew what I do now. I wouldn’t have used it for a wheel barrow chassis

Did exactly the same thing around the same time, with the same feelings plus a massive falling out with Tim Wooley, who later went on to even greater outrages.

I went and picked up the kit, they modified my macpherson struts while they loaded the car. I remember not been impressed with the quality. I was only 16, but had been gas, and stick welding from the age of 12. We moved it once with a strap around the rollbar, It folded the mount in half.

I sold it. And bought another bike

The PCD adaptors supplied to allow Ford wheels on the Triumph front hubs had been flame cut freehand out of 1" thick mild steel, hadn't been finished on a lathe and the hole in the centre to clear the hub bearing was too small. Each adaptor was massively out of true and balance and was heavier than the alloy wheel which bolted to it.

well that's the thing as much as I look at and cringe its been running round for 33 years with out falling apart

Not saying they are brilliantly made by any means, or designed. I did have to make new rear shock/spring mounts, put a couple of rails in to hold the chassis together/spart at the rear instead of just the roll-bar and the petrol tank. And move the steering rack so inverse ackermann effect became proper ackerman, and reduce the massive bumpsteer from inches to not noticeable. But the actual main structure has held together well.

Roll bar did bend up and back when I used the crane at work to pick it up to work on the axle ;-)

As for kit-cars - it's a lot easier to throw a 500 quid kit-car at the scenery than a 30 grand MG ;-) Although at the bottom of some valley somewhere at the bottom of an seemingly un-climbable hill, I did meet two gents closing on 70 who had been trialling the same 1930's MG they bought for a fiver off a man kicking it at the side of the road when they were school boys walking to school.

Same MG came blasting past us in the Dutton on the M4 or M5 going north after the trial - Dutton does 45/50mph at valve bounce revs . . .

It's an excellent way of spending not too much money to enjoy motorsport, see lots of fantastic scenery you wouldn't normally get to see as you can end up miles from the beaten track. And where else would you see Beetles, Trojans, Suzuki Jimney thingies, kit-cars, Imps, Mk1 and 2 Escorts, BMW3 series, and just about anything else, normally being thoroughly thrashed. It's not a totally safe sport - someone died after rolling back uncontrolled and rolling - passenger/bouncer was thrown clear.

I have a Scimitar SS1 waiting for me to sort it for Class 5 - but the chassis reminds me of the Eagle you pictured. Slam the door and you can hear the gentle tinkle of the chassis falling on the floor in little flakes.

So instead I have an MR2 parked out front waiting for me to build a new mid-engine chassis with lots of lock and suspension travel . . .

have you worked out how your going to build it ? double wishbone suspension to get wheel travel ?
why did you choose an mr2 or did one just happen along at the right price ?
or are there merits to having such a heavy engine ie traction
how will you get a really good steering angle taxi front hubs ?

so bringing us slightly back on track
after the chassis was painted I decided that it was time to pull the engine and box out of the lexus
problem !!!! I had been driving it round for 3 months and had come to the conclusion that it was far to nice to break up

so scoured ebay and gum tree but GS 430's are a bit thin on the ground but eventually a bodily rough one surfaced at a
reasonable price so the gold one still drives around to this day

trying to get the engine and box out with out cutting any wires is rather a mission but I got there eventually

I found so many things I dident know I had lol, black boxes everywhere
there were 3 on the transmission tunnel just behind the hand brake, theses had arrows on indicating which way they had to face
they also had pre-sets

for calibrating them, I can only assume they are some sort of acceleration or g sensors for the traction control/stability control system
but anyway the whole loom came out in one piece
